Default Passat W8 4motion.

As above, there is a Passat W8 4motion for sale near me, and my mate might want it.

Its done 89k, full VAG history and its 4k.

What does everyone think, is it worth a punt, or would you never go near one?

Any input greatly appreciated, it is a bit of a wild card!

There was a report on that very car at the rear of Performance Car magazine recently. Rare and a proper Q car. I would imagine the running costs to be high..... Got to be worth a look at that money

Not that great, weigh 200kg more than a 540i and don't have as much torque.

How uninspiring! I suspect even your £4k will continue to free-fall... but then at £2.10 per kilo maybe it's not so bad...

I think it is a interesting choice, worth a test drive at least?

Get him to take it out and see what he thinks. It's a lot of cylinders for the money an AWD to boot. You can put an aftermarket exhaust on and that makes them sound quite interesting. Let us know how he gets on.

They are nice cars we have one in at work . Really smooth to drive but don't expect great performance or economy .

A lot of cylinders that does not behave like a V8 though.

No waves of woofly torque

At 4k I would give it serious thought, Top engine, It is good for another 200k if you service it correctly.
If you have kids its a great choice too, I think this model has the build in booster seats in the back.
Looks more than a 4k car too. You will never make on a car like this but you will get more than 4k worth of driving out of it.

Going to look at it with my mate on saturday, if only for the test drive!

My mate rand and booked the test last night, and the bloke said its a real sleeper, suprised a few fast cars, including evo's, in its time WTF!

Were going in my scooby, so it will be interesting to see his face when my mate takes it down the dual carriage way, then i come flying past!

Same place has a V6 4motion golf, E36 M3, 525i X (4 wheel drive), and a host of other wild card cars, so it could be an interesting afternoon lol!

yeah- 0-60 in 6.3 for the manual gives a better indication of relative performance.

But higher speed is where the weigh isnt such an issue and power is more important - And undoubtedly it will shift with 271bhp... Might be coming round to it a little more.

0-60 in 6.3 is the BMW 540i isn't it?? From the report it seems like the W8 does it in 8-ish seconds.

Cheers,
Grant

Lots of conflicting info, from 6.5 to 8.0 ish Volkswagen Passat W8 | Car Features | 4car | channel4.com

However, 0-100mph in 19 seconds is slightly less embarrassing as pub figures go. Quicker than an accord type R and an E60 530d.

Sadly that is still slower than a Rover 600ti and a BMW E39 528i

Hmm, part of me likes the Q car idea but it isnt fast enough by the sounds of it, I bet a remapped PD 130/ 150 petrol turbo would be giving it a hard time.

Remember, break one item, engine, box, 4wd and you may as well throw it away.

You will be paying the running costs for a 12 cylinder car and it still looks like a Mini Cab with extra chrome.

Regardless of a 4wd drive train It weighs two tonnes, the Passat was never a handler.

Sure its a "Nice" car but I cant imagine its much fun.

I suspect there is a reason its cheap.

There's a very good reason for that.

It kind of puts me in mind of the old (1990 ish) Audi V8, basically a very expensive V8 version of the Audi 100/200.

For not much more you could get an MG ZT 260, still not massively quick but more interesting.

7 Series, A8, Lexus etc ?

I've driven one, interesting car and did handle reasonably well, but it is a heavy car with a thirsty engine!

Curiosity value I suppose, and it will run forever if serviced properly.

At the end of the day though, IMHO £4k is better spent elsewhere. . . .

Went for the test drive, and the passat was very "wafty", felt like it had no torque or power but the ride was sublime, im guessing its weight and engine configuration was very detrimental to its over all feel!

There is a very steep hill in my town, and the passat couldnt do a hill start to save its life, the tiptronic was a real let down, reverse parking was a real nightmare, you either rolled back slowly, or shot forward, maybe it needed a bit of tlc?

Overall it felt like a 6 cylinder passat, very similar to the 2.8 syncro my mates dad used to have, which isnt good enough for a W8 that will drink all the petrol in the county if you let it.

He didnt buy it, but is now trying to find a manual to compare it to

Couldnt go out in the 525iX as it had something wrong with it, he had just acquired a CTR with a supercharger on it, and a Leggy with 350bhp, but wasnt keen to show them off for some reason?

Garage, i think, was slightly dodgy, maybe buying reposessed cars or something, there was no ordinary vehicles, all were big engined, low volume, top of the range cars.

My mate is going to look at a GS300 next weekend!
