Are you refering to a Golf R32, if so i believe they have a chain which is good for 100k.

Well - issue with chains is that they can go on and on. It's when you decide it's getting a bit risky.
i.e. My Saab 9k chain will go on until about 200k miles but most folks change them at about 140k.
It it's a duplex chain and really well setup then 200k plus should be do-able.

As above. Chain and life of engine. (same as 1.6FSI and 1.2 3 cylinder engines)

However, when I worked for VW (seems a long time ago now ) the amount of times the Service "advisors" would book a car in for a cambelt change was unreal. They used to get a £10 bonus for every car. So any owner near 60K or 4 years was sold one. Most customers didn't spot it.

Luckily those "f.wits in the workshop" managed to spot the error and were only too keen to point out their mistake. And didn't rip off the customers!

I have been looking at the prices of R's and 9k for an 06 seems very cheap.
Any details...I presume it doesn't have leather or sat nav

That may well be the case but for a purchase thats very cheap. Mk4 R's can go for more than that. Cheapest mk5 on an 06 i have spotted was closer to 13k.

Yes. Same as Mk3 Golf or Corrado VR6.

3.0 V6 in Passats (seperate heads i.e. PROPER V engine) are belts. Pretty rare though.

chain on my MkIV 4Mo.... and it is meant to an engine lifetime item (of course if the chain DOES go, it's damn near a new engine anyway!)

and yes - I had the "it's time to change your cam belt sir" comment from VW when it went in for a service.

I got a call later explaining the guy was an idiot.
