What your looking at there is actually a full replacement to the current 5 series line up.
Obviously whilst still in the concept stage they are still toying with the idea of making the saloon a hatchback instead...thus the "leak" to gauge market feedback.
Hatchback on a 5-er? I don't think they'll commit it - it'll still look like the above, but in the more traditional saloon/touring format. I can see why they want to do it though. If anyone has read Bangle's write ups, one of the biggest issue on modern cars is to give it a sleek low bodyline, but give lots of rear head room (thus the double deck style boot on the 7 series), using a fastback/hatchback means there is less of an issue with trying to style a car with a high roofline and somehow slope it off and give it a bootlid without making it car several feet longer than it should be (refer to the Ford Orion).
What would be good is a hatchback/fastback 3 series; As the saloon is useless and the touring kind of cramps the style.
