Which car for £12k.
Hi Guys,
Im after some advice on behalf of another.
A car is required for around 12k, which will be fairly quick (sub 7 0-60 or much torque) and to cope with 25k miles a year, and as such not terrible MPG.
We have come up with a decent list but non of them perfect. so thought is show it to you guys and see what you come up with.
Cheers

How about something like a Golf TDI? Quick remap and huge torque decent mpg and will do 25k a year easy. My mates 05 TDI has just gone past 146.000 and feels like brand new.

Not going to get anywhere near sub 7 seconds in a Golf TDI.
A mk5 GTi would fit the bill though - good(ish) on fuel and rapid too. Edition 30 even better.
If a bigger car is needed - a leggy 330d might be a good option. Rapid, good on fuel, nice to drive.
If a smaller car is needed, something fun and little like a Mini Cooper S might be worth a look - brilliant handling, nice and nippy.

And £2k added to the price with probably £2k taken off the resale value... Then there's the brake/suspension mods you'd need too...
Scooby - avoid Alfas. They are all cr4p (since to 90s).
If a Z4 is a contender, you must have a wide criteria!

Vectra VXR - 300bhp/400lbs ft Torque (with £500 remap)
Reasonable fuel economy, can be had with all the toys and is great fun to drive. Ignore the badge snobs and try one for yourself. Very underrated cars.

if anyone was gonna sugest a vxr it was gonna be you,,, pmsl
are vxr8's down around that yet by the way?

VXR8's are still up around 17-18k for anything half decent. A high milage, heavily worked one might be gotten for around 15-16k but advice would be to steer well clear.
Monaro's are slightly cheaper yes - something half decent will set you back around 14-15k with the nice one's coming in around 16-18k

Yeah it's good fun to say the least! Respect it in the wet, and it's fine. Power delivery is astounding in Vtec, it has to be witnessed!
ONO get it!

Guy on VXR forum says he got 22mpg with the cruise control set at 150mph on the autobahn. However, I think you only achieve that by virtue of the consistency, if you put even a tiny bit of load on it you get like 3mpg
Average around town seems to be 15mpg
On a run is 25+mpg
Average is about 20mpg. So pretty bad considering OP's planned mileage.

How about a Focus St-3
which coincidently I have a m8 selling one for about £9k with 27k on the clock.
Could use the extra cash to get a dreamscience unit and some other toys.

Yeah ive suggested the ST to him however i i dont think hell like it. RWD preferred.
yeah ive suggest e46 m3, either that or the 3l z4 coupe would be my choice i rekon.
My m3 is surprisingly good on the motorway when you can keep it at sensible speeds.
The ruels are pretty soft. But anything like impreza/evo/sub 20 mpg is out of the question.
25+ (preferrably 30+) on motorway i think is more like the requirement.
Lots of choice which this criteria. Shame that budget isnt 20k which would really open up the market to something which fits the bill perfectly.
I said about a vectra vxr and the response was, yeah but have you ever walked past one and thought "oo i really want one of those"...fair point, aint all about the numbers i suppose.
Any outsides i would not normally think of? lexus? infinity anything? 300c?

Six cylinder if possible - so much smoother, so much more grunty, so much less gruesome sounding. Four pot diesels now make my ears wilt.
So 3.0TDI Audi, 325d/330d BMW or a Merc with a 320CDI engine. The C320CDI is a bit of a sleeper and pretty rapid.6 pot BMs and Audis will be a bit tired for £12k.

Doesn't matter with Audi's if they are tired or not - they seem to break down for fun. I've personally never been in a Bmw oil burner but i would love one for the daily slog. Mercs still seem like a car for the older gent in most cases

An M3 will not make 30mpg, the computers on them are normally optimistic anyway. I'd say on a cruise on the motorway you'd get 26mpg AT BEST.
