£6k to spend on a 4/5 door car
Provisos:
1) Not stupidly expensive to run
2) Not a Ford fecking Focus!
3) Something that looks decent
4) Must last me for a good 5 years
I am quite lucky as I only live 2.5 miles away from work, but then again, I still don't fancy a sub 20mpg optimaxoholic!
Quite like the Audi A4, but will I find a good one for the money??

Sounds similar to my situation not long ago. Went for a Mondeo TDCI in the end

Really like the car. Plenty of nice toys which going from a scoob was something i was looking forward to. Drives well for a big car, handles pretty well for a FWD Oil burner. Engine is a little unrefined when cold but once it's started to warm up it's smooth enough for a 4 pot. Averaging about 43mpg which is 550miles to a tank. Road tax of £155. These were the defining factors in moving from the scoob. I've had a couple niggles with the ST. The EGR failed after a month of having it. Replaced under the warranty I had. Rear brake capliper siezed on which meant they both needed replacing along with disc and pads. Again though that was covered by the garage I bought it from.
I too looked at the A4's and the thing which made me choose the Ford over the Audi was for the money I could get a car 2 or 3 years newer, approx 30k less miles, better spec and in future I knew the servcing and parts should be cheaper.
If you fit a decat pipe and have a Bluefin ECU remap the ST 2.2 TDCI engine is good for 180-190bhp and near 400lbft or torque while still giving you 50mpg on the motorway.

I bought a Zetec S TDCi Mondeo a week ago. Its doing fine at the minute.
I'll be upgrading to an ST TDCI in the future.
BE AWARE though, if you chip it, chances are the clutch wont like it and its a dual mass flywheel the MUST be changed along with the clutch and its around 500 quid just for the parts.
The injectors, rear calipers and egr valves are are common problems so look for one that has already had these fixed.
I'm sticking a bluefin in mine shortly, if the clutch goes, it goes. I want the 300lbs torque.
It pulls like a mildy mapped Impreza just now!!

As above, the Mondeo ST TDCI is a great option as is the mazda 6.
The mazda is reliable and comes with loads of spec, cruise, climate, BOSE ect, but it is VERY bland to look at. IMHO of course lol.
I've had a Leon and ibiza Cupra TDI, had them both mapped and were a hoot to drive and both averaged over 50mpg. Couldnt fault either of them.
Have you concidered a Honda Accord Type-R?
Awesome cars, cheap to run, bulit proof, quick, great handling and still look good.
Your not gonna get 50mpg but you'll enjoy driving it alot more than the others.
