Mondeo estate is where it's at. I bet they're expensive to run, service, insure etc. But if that's not an issue, then go for it. I can afford a Porsche, as long as I don't have to tax, insure and put petrol in it

I just sold my Porsche ... need a family car as the kids are growing and a 911 and a STI impreza dont really cover that base any better than my mrs' Fiesta....
running costs are a factor but not an over powering one as i doubt it will be more to run/ insure than my Porsche has been...only used that as a weekender...now need a weekday car and the STI will be the weekender i guess

chrysler parts are hard to get hold of and expensive, also they are in deep doo doo, and suffer more recalls than i have ever had to deal with!! however build quality is good
If you really need a family car get a VW\SEAT or an Audi, parts are good they are almost the same and the diesel version aint too bad perforrmance wise and reliable when looked after

My Impreza does not tick the "famiily car" box....where would i put the dog, in the boot of a saloon?...My son is 5 and its no longer acceptable to leave the dog, he wants him to come EVERYWHERE!...which has not been the case in the past. Also i cannot get everything i need for our holiday in the car anymore as we have a 2 month old girl now........so packing is madness.

I was sat waiting for some 1 in a car park the other day.
A bloke drove in with one of these, It was awkward for him to get in the car park to start with, it then took him 20 minutes to fit it into a parking space.
He went to the cash point came back, then it took him another 20 minutes to reverse it out of the space and leave.

You shouldn't really let your five-year-old dictate what happens.
Anyway, why can't it be mainstream? There are loads of excellent mainstream cars. Your Spec D Impreza seems to be at odds with your "I'm not run-of-the-mill" attitude to the family car. On the one hand you're rejecting the lurid colours and big wings that typify the "look at me" status of the usual STI, then you want your kids-and-dogs mobile to stand out from the crowd!
You're a weirdo. No offence!

A friend of mine ran a 300C from new but only kept it for 12 months due to constant minor faults that had to be fixed under warranty. He then bought an MX5 (seemed a bit random to me) and rarely sees the dealer outside of the scheduled services.
I run a Forester XT PPP with all the practical extras, nets & rubber mat in the boot and easy to clean leather interior. My friends only ever see the practical family car side of things not knowing that it's easily the fastest car I've ever owned (including a Turbo 2000 wagon). Self-levelling suspension as well for those trips to Ikea

One of my neighbours has one of these in cream! Adorned with the seemingly obligatory 20 inch chrome wheels. I just can't help giggling when I see him driving it.
His previous car was a pretty low rent BMW 3 series with an M3 badge stuck on the back.
