Default RX7 Tuning?

Hi Chaps,

I dont seem to be able to post on mazda rotary club so i thought i would post on here.

Im considering changing my track car from an e36 m3 evo to something boosted as i miss the trubo. And i cant really get any more power out of the m3 without spending big bucks.

So ive been trawling, my initial budget would be 5-6k.

How are the rx7's? They can clearly be tuned up, but where does the stock equipment run out? Gear box, clutch, engine, injectors etc etc?

Also i think their curb weight is 1280 kg? Any idea how much of that can be shed?

My m3 will be around 300bhp / 1250 kg when im finished. I would ideally like 400bhp and around 1000kg. But im struggling to find anything which can fit the criteria.

So how easily tuned is the rx7? And what weight can they be got down too?

(also looking at an r34 GTT but they are a little bit too much to tune at the moment). Or i could turbo / super the m3. Or change an an e46 m3 and strip it.

400bhp per tonne is gonna be expensive, if it were me, and purely a track car, i would go for a bike engined westfield or similar, prob the cheapest way to get 400bhp/tonne.

You are best to wait until a good single turbo conversion comes up on PH, which they do from time to time. In other words, let someone else spend the money. My mate picked up a lovely GT35r single turbo RX7 a few years back for about £8k. It is properly quick at 1.0bar and pulls away from our other mates e46 M3 with total ease. I'm pretty sure it's as fast as (or faster) than my other (other) mates sagaris.

I'd love one....but 95%+ of what comes up is pure sh*te. You'll probably have to wait a while to find a good one.

unfortunatley i have ruled out the likes of kit cars.

I have been researching turboing m3's. However i think i can rule out the rx7 from the research i have done.

The r34 could still be fun, but will never give 400/ton.perhaps 330.

A common mod for an RX-7 is to fit a chevy V8 in it. I want to say an LS3 but I forget exactly. There are companies that do it in a real short space of time.

what about something like a pulsar gtir? standard 220bhp but only 1190kg curb weight so im sure could be stripped to 1000kg if not below plus engine mods to up the bhp and added benefit of 4wd for cornering.

Yeah as above I know of 3 that have been well over 440/450bhp.

Only problem is that some parts are hard to come by, like rear brake callipers.

Not sure on weight but price wise you could go for a Nissan Silvia (200SX). Easy to tune to silly power and rear wheel drive too.

200sx is possibly. but its big money to get those figures as the engines aint the strongest. if im going to rebuild the engine i might as well turbo the m.

Buy a EG shape civic & do a turbo'd B18 on it. Very light & stupidly fast!

and fwd...

seems an r34 will get about the closest. can probably get 260-300 with my M. Turbo / supercharger is going to cost big money.

Might as well already start with a turbod motor. This pic is really tempting me!

Need to finish the M off first as there doesnt seem to be an easy route. The M is already very fast on track, but after more straight line kick

You sure? Brother in law has an S14 he goes drifting in. Bolted on lots of S15 bits (straight swap) and running 350bhp. Drives to and from the track as well. Certainly a lot stronger unit than an RX7!

A properly rebuilt and set up RX7 is perfectly reliable. In fact, if I recall some of the companies rebuilding them are now offering 2 year unlimited mileage warranties on up to 1.0bar of boost (you're talking 400bhp here)
