Default Subaru Towing machine / Daily runner maybe?!?

Im just after some assistance please. Im after another vehicle that will fit these requirements:
  1. Less the £2500 ish
  2. Relatively cheap to run (Tax, Fuel, Insurance, up-keep)
  3. Will pull a Subaru on trailer
  4. 4 x 4 Preferable (good in snow)
  5. At least 3 seats (2 Kids)
The intention is to use the vehicle every now and again for school runs (we have another car) and maybe even occasional commute to work. Will pull a Subaru on a towed transported/trailer. Fuel costs are not a major issue as I dont do a lot of miles per annum, but I once had a series 2 Land Rover 3.5L Petrol that did 9mpg (never again ).

So my thoughts were a 2.5d L200 twin cab if I could get one for my budget. They are 4x4, plenty room and if you get the right one low Tax band.

Help please Im confused.cm

Also my budget could be raised for the right vessel, but the more I spend the less I have for the track toy

Question

Hi Rob, is it a 'braked' trailer as this will have some bearing on the right vehicle/weight

Not sure what you know about trailers, my experience is through towing speedboats. A braked trailer is fitted with brakes on the wheels which activate when you brake the tow car by compressing the tow hitch - this means you can use a lighter vehicle (more choice available and usually better on fuel) to tow with due to the trailer having its own brakes.

All vehicles have a max tow weight they can manage un-braked and braked (trailers) which you need to take into account when buying the tow vehicle and trailer.

Cheers for the heads up

Ive towed two trailers in the past and both were equipped with self breaking mech. I towed one with a Skoda Octavia which had ample power, but with the weight of my STI bug on the trailer it was harrid to pull. I got to 50 on the motorway and it was in my eyes "unsafe". The other experience was with a Renault Master Luton pulling my UK300, this was a doddle, you wouldnt know you were pulling anything at all even with its 2.5D engine.

The weight of the car/trailer being towed will have a bearing on the car being used to tow. There is a minimum weight ratio of the towing car to towed weight and that differs if the trailer is braked. Not sure what it is but others will probably be able to help. Toyota rav 4, Honda crv can be got for good prices and not too dear to insure. Kia sportage is another option. I've been looking for a winter hack!!! Diesel will be better for economy but are too new to be in your price range I fear.

This is a handy site when it comes to choosing a towing vehicle.

Jeep grand Cherokee 4.0.
Very cheap to buy, will see 20 to the gallon and 25 on a run, fully loaded, will pull a house down, engines are very good....

I sold one a couple of months ago. Was a facelift model on a W plate. Was in lovely nick and sold for £1750. What alot of motor for the money.

Maybe too late, but a Subaru Forester would have been a good shout. It can also accept Impreza hand me down mods.

We have a 1989 Mitsubishi Pajero that's now done 250,000 miles.
We fitted a wiper motor about 6 years ago, and that's about it.
It'll tow anything, and go anywhere, which is why despite having replaced it with something newer for the wife to drive, we still have it!

Thanks for the Offer Alan, but im now sorted (hopefully)

Subject to it being "straight", "hpi clear", "genuine" and "as advertised" I have bought a Mitsi Shogun Sport 3.0 Warrier V6 which is LPG converted. It meets all the criteria (almost). £250 per annum tax, 70p per litre gas (so around 38-50 mpg in terms of petrol costs at £1.40), weighs in at 1900kg unloaded, apparantly comes to life when off road, well where I live thats bloody good news and lastly is a perfect towing toy

Nice Looks a minter.

I'd like one to be honest, but should get something with good MPG, but really fancy a Shogun/Pajero, SWB though.

I was thinking it was too much for me too when I was looking for something as I budgeted £2500, however its been well looked after with service history and a stacks of bills leading towards £15k And thats just general looking after, such as replacement LPG system, tyres, exhaust etc.

I'll give it a month, if she hasnt got use to it by then i'll sell it back on and look for something simular but smaller
