Default BMW 530D or a 535D

Two choices:

Both are 2005 cars.

BMW 530d Fully loaded Single Turbo with 100k on the clock. £8200
BMW 535d Fully loaded Twin Turbo with 120k on the clock + chipped (Cost £500) £9500

Which would you opt for?

My brother want sot sell me his 535 as he wants to buy a newer one.

I was thinking 530d as its more fuel efficient (though never been in one), but the 535 does bring a smile to my face when i drive it.

Also thinking that if i do keep the 535 for say two years how much is it likely to depreciate. I would think more then then the 530 as its more expensive and has more mileage..

But does the mileage matter?

I can use all the power - Nurberg ring is not too far at all...

but its a shame the 535d does not have a paddle shift..

The 530 if it's a manual. Otherwise the 535.

I'd be negotiating price with him a bit. I just bought a 535d 05 plate, 68k miles, full BM SH absolutely stunning inside and out with xenons, full leather, heated seats, front and rear PDC, etc. I paid £8750 from a garage. I've only had it about three weeks and I love it.

Thread with a couple of pics here.

looking into auto trader they are near £10k mark with sat nav etc..but with like 100k + on the clock.

get it remapped and you will fall in Love...

I Think it was a good price and the garage was quite a nice set up as well, not some back street dive. It's had one previous owner and he fitted new pads to the front for the MOT. It is due an oil change in about 2k miles and the tyres have all got loads of life left. Like you said, they are nearer £10k for similar on Autotrader but something I've noticed is that at that price they don't perhaps sell. There are quite a few still for sale that were up when I first started looking over a month ago. I was initially looking at 530d's until I saw this one and couldn't afford to not buy it.
I'd go and have a look on some of the Beemer forums for advice on which to go for and good luck with whatever you decide on.

here is another..

lovely car - £500 chipping is a must, it transforms the drive and power delivery..power delivery is awesome...averages 25mpg around town, 40 mpg on the motorway..if you can drive slow that is!....lol

Awesome cars,I've a 335d.question is,if you bought the 530 arent you always going to wish that you'd bought the 535!
Mileage shouldn't be an issue with a fbmwsh.

I think the sport does look nicer especially from the back but I reckon the important bits like engine and gearbox are the same on both. What was crucial for me as my research was telling me to steer away from cars with 120k miles on, especially the 535d's.

Mileage is not an issue when serviced on time and with correct oils etc. Personally I would go for the 530 then have it mapped.

Fair enough..but the car drives like its still new..

my old Audi A4 2.7tdi 2006 had 170k on the clock and it was still driving like new...cars are not what they used to be years ago..

I know what you're saying about hi miles on a diesel engine but seriously go read some of the horror stories on the Beemer forums. My top point of criteria was lowish miles.

I have a 57reg 330D Msport and it is such a nice drive, they do tend to be a bit juicey though so no doubt the 3.5 is worse but probably worthwhile but we bought this car for the comfort side and leave the performance to the scoob hence not bothering with the 335D.

Also have an E91 330d M Sport Touring. Can easily get 50mpg out of it on the motorway and it is averaging 41.5 in all conditions.

Lovely car and very, very quick when you want it to be. (Manual)

I wouldn't be buying either of the two you have listed. I wouldn't spend anywhere near that kind of money for that high mileage. Regardless of people saying with full service history etc then mileage doesn't matter, it does.

And most importantly think of resale. You have the car for two years and put say, 20,000 miles on it so then you're trying to sell a car with 120-140k on the clock, and it will be 8-9 years old.....Will probably half in value, if not a little more.

Paddle shift is easy to do, all you need is an M5 steering wheel and squib

Why diesel?

Get a 545i/550i on gas!

Our resident BMW tech doesn't post on here anymore but I remember him saying these engines can have a lot of expensive problems ie blown turbos etc

I think the 525d, 530d and 535d all share the same 3.0l engine. The 530d is a single turbo whilst the 535 is a twin sequential turbo. It has a small turbo that works from tick over, then a larger turbo kicks in and both work together, then the larger turbo takes over on its own. Apparently there is quite a complex control system managing this which can start playing up on higher mileage cars. Swirl flaps are apparently another issue on higher mileage cars too. The auto gearbox can become clunky which can be resolved with a software update. Also the gearbox sump is plastic and can warp and crack resulting in lost lubricant and subsequent mechanical failures which can be expensive, circa £3.5K to fix.
Obviously as with all car forums only the horror stories are posted so keep that in mind. Whatever you do don't go on the BMW forum on Pistonheads because you'd never buy one without it being less then 3days old with no more than 7 miles on the clock and a comprehensive BMW warranty that can only be bought for cars with less than 60k on the clock.
On the plus side the auto is 6 speed and is silky smooth. I think the latest model that Ding has, has an 8 speed auto box.

lol, nice usefull info there..

Was reading up, the smaller turbo starts spinning at 1500rpm, and it 100% used by 2000rpm...413+ lbs of torque

You know what if a car has less then a certain amount of mileage, i would question if it has been clocked - it is very easy to do before every MOT! Older cars used to just get change there clocks.. lol, and back again at sale time or mOT

and no one out of there minds would buy such a nice car if they were not going to cover the mileage.

on the other hand if it were a 1,9L engine - i would keep away from it..as it would be noisy as ****..
