Thumbs up Result - Hardtop

Been looking to buy one for our MR2, they are selling for £350+ on fleabay/classifieds

Just collected an immaculate one - for the princely sum of £160.00

Now the kicker - to fit the hardtop you need a fitting kit which is effectively four brackets and several screws and a 30cm lead to connect the heated rear window. Toyota are the only people who made these. Toyota want £ 350.00 for the kit! even on fleabay they are changing hands for £250.00 s/h

Just located one of the kits (s/h) for £140.00

Thats expensive Paul. Youre only looking at £40 for an MX-5 fitting kit and you can buy the frankenbolts on eBay for about a fiver (you can use the rear bolts and the front catches to fix the top, although you should add side catches too).

£300 seems to be the going rate for a reasonable hard top for an MX-5. I bought a black one (the most desirable colour unfortunately) for my black car, along with a bag, for £300 recently, and thought that Id done well.

£160 is a keen price, but I suppose that theres less demand for them?

Good morning to you. The fitting kit is fitted to the car, it does not come with the 4 anchor points fitted - would you believe it!

Hello. Same with an NA or NB MX-5. NAs all had the frankenbolts fitted, but they were an extra for the NBs. To fit the hard top properly you also need a set of brackets which fit next to the seatbelt mounts.

You can get away with only using the front hood catches and the frankenbolts, making it free on a Mk1 car, but it probably wont be water tight.

Still, we have both paid about the same for a hard top, but I expect that yours is newer and smarter. Is it black or colour matched / the wrong colour?

the above is what Toyota want £350.00 for - cheeky sods! sounds like a similar way of mounting the roof to the car as the MX5. The roof is red, the car dk blue, planning to paint the hardtop black over Christmas - or might well wrap it in matt black.

Matte black and carbon look both seem to attract buyers, and are doubtless cheaper. The MX5 fitting kit can be bought for between £40 and £60. Im sure that the stealers will charge like a raging bull though, but with the cars being so common and the part suiting all 1989-2005 cars, supply is plentifull and the cost pretty reasonable.
