Been looking at buying another scoob for the summer, but for some reason I keep looking at adverts on pistonheads at Escort Cosworths.
Always wanted one of these since I was a kid and I still think they look amazing after all these years.

The thing is I cant believe how they command such a high price, I look at a advert for a 06 plate Hawkeye for 10,5k then I look at a Escort Cosworth with twice the mileage and a few little niggles and the price is £13k, which is the only thing that puts me off. But keep thinking should I bite the bullet and go for it, or play it safe and go for another scoob!!!

Both cars would be used the same(as a 2nd car) and garaged, But the only thing with the scoob is how hard they are to sell afterwards and how much the depreciate so quickly, but I still love the way the scoob drives and how parts are not really that expensive compared to most performance cars .

Anyone got a Escort Cosworth on here??? How do they compare to say a classic STi?? Anyone talk me out of wanting one!!!

Dont know what it is with the Cossie, I see one and I just cant help thinking how much I would love to see one sitting in my garage!!!

My mate bought an immaculate escort cosworth recently, when interior was removed there was rot in all sorts of places. They all rot. Has taken a long time to sort it out. Otherwise, nice cars!

 

If you can get a solid cossie i would say go for it mate, these things wont depreaciate anymore imho and tbh they are a cracking car, timeless classic, i love them,.

Mate of mine had one - he spent months and months looking for the right one and paid a premium as it was such low miles and had receipts down to the wiper blades. He spent a fortune on it with problems and says it was not on the same planet as his Evo 7 never mind the same league but he maintains that he's glad he scratched the itch

 

Went down to jct28 recently, no longer there, just the taxi station.

 

You could buy the cossie and as long as you are careful and buy a good one, you would pretty much get your money back in 12 months time, in which time the hawk eye sti will have dropped another couple of grand then you can buy that cheaper!

 

I'm the same as the op, I promised myself an escort cossie before I was 30. I'm now nearly 34 and still no cossie

Would still love to have one though, maybe before I'm 40

 

Go and have a drive of one, you'll soon make up your mind..

 

Just buy a Porsche, lose no money & possibly make some.

All that said I always wanted a Cossie myself, was the car to aspire to when I was a lad. Reckon good ones are rare now, spend 20k & buy an absolute minter.

 

As above really like other guys in their thirties on here i grew up loving those blue oval Cossies never being able to afford one and settling on a Series1&2. Then i heard a Scooby one day......

 

Agree with DJ jon, you really need to be spending 20+ on a minter, 13 grand escort will be trouble....

 

Thought about this when I bought the scooby but at the time i needed to use the car a lot so backed off.

I was warned "never meet your heros" at the end of the day it's a 20 year old car so it's bound to have issues and rust if you actually take it out and drive it. what car wouldn't?

Also, it is an escort shell on a sierra chassis so it's not going to handle like a modern car. People forget that.

I've always promised myself an Escort Cosworth. I couldn't afford one when you could actually buy them new. If I was my age now when they came out, I'd have had one in a heart beat. Even today, they have soo much road presence.

However, they are getting on for 20 years old now, and given that and potential problems that come with a 20 year old car, I've always bottled it and bought something else......... much newer.

Given a lottery win, or if I earned more money, then yeah, I'd try to find the best example I could and snap it up. In fact I'd buy 2. Keep one standard, and modify the other.

 

Thats the problem I have, I dont think I have the bottle to hand over 12k+ for a 20 year old car. My heart is telling me "go for it", but my head is telling me "not to bother "

Think it should be a car i go for if I had plenty of disposal income im afraid!!!! Unfortunately I have to work very hard to pay that sort of cash out, so looks like I'll have to ***** out and go the sensible route again!!!!

No many minters out there. I get to drive my mates occasionally(green luxe,pretty immaculate) great car but i do prefer the scoob and my fat *** slides about on the leather recaros. He finds the scoobys ride too harsh.

 

Ive driven the cossie quite a few times. Honestly mate if i had £15k spare i would jump for one. That said you need to spend some time looking for one. You can find some with 60k on the clock. One of my friends has bought one. He has had subarus nissans mitsubushis vauxhalls the whole lot. Since he bought his cosworth he has never looked back. Always getting people ask him what he has done etc. Its running a comfy 450bhp so wipes most things of the line altho he wont take it much past 120 on the tracks.

Mine from a good few year back, wish i had kept it, was very reliable, harvey gibb engine, 420bhp but lag monster worth a fortune now if i had kept it.

 

My made just paid a fair few quid out getting the hardly noticeable stone chipped front splitter painted. Scraped it 2 days later!! funny as

 

I owned one for a year in 1997. Bought for £18k, sold for £18k. All the Cosworth bits were great; all the Ford bits were rubbish. Never forget the first day I had it though.

The STI (v3) which followed was 25% 'better'. In my opinion, the order to own this type of car is Integrale > Escort Cosworth > Impreza STI > Evo > ...

The best way to enjoy an Escort Cosworth now is to admire somebody else's.

here was my old one, i always wanted one, this was over 400bhp. To me felt to old, heavy, rattly and i would never buy one again. bought it for 16k. But as mentioned before it was an itch i needed to scratch and i did.
Its best being a poster on your bedroom wall tbh

 

I've had two Escort Cossies and one RS500 between 1998 & 2004.

Best thing about these cars is they are past masters...... unfortunately though against todays machinery, that's where they belong.

My Spec C was in a different league to any of these cars, but you wouldn't buy a Cossie now because of their performance / handling against any other marque..... it's more of a heritage thing imo now.

However..... nothing will ever make me forget or has been bettered since, the feeling I had when I picked up my first Escort Cossie in 1998, driving it back down the M6. It was unbelievable as I had wanted an Escort Cossie since they came out in 92...... I felt like a lottery winner and I suspect all the people staring down the M6 thought the same!!!

a cossie wa always on my "one day" list.

even with there well known flaws its the look - and id buy one with power - its presence just cant be matched imo. even if tey nowdays could be left standing.

dont ave enough to buy one these days but still look in awe at other good ones forever more
