Your like Me Iggy mine doesnt seem to use any, as for the HG, it was only the first Hawks i thought, after googling my arse off it was also rectified wasnt it later on with a diff gasket etc.

It was, the MY06 STi 2.5 did suffer HG failures, which like you say was sorted on the MY07!

When you're checking the oil, make sure the car is on a perfectly flat piece of tarmac. Makes a huge difference. Also leave it for half an hour for all the oil to drain back down to the sump. My guess is you are overfilling it. Mine doesnt use a drop between services (8000 miles) . With piston clearances of 1/2 thou you shouldnt be burning any at all.

My 2009 STI hatch has done approx 15K and doesnt use oil. Mainly normal driving rather than fast. I'd be concerned if I were you. At least get the dealer to check it over so the complaint is logged and perform a compression test minimum. Does it smoke at start up when cold?

Cars in the garage today, im getting them to do a compression test. The car doesnt smoke when it starts up. Its used for 3 litres in 6 weeks and probably done about 1.2k's

My uk hawk sti 07 does go through a bit, just added a litre yesturday. i do top up every month or so. mine has been mapped and i've got 45k on the clock..

do you use fully sythetic or anything mega special, sometimes that can burn quickly, my new saloon has 30w 5 in when i bought it and just had the 10k service and they put in 40w 10 Helix and i think ive only put in half a pint if that, doesnt use it Fingers crossed

2 litre in a year? id be a bit concerned, my 06 sti has used about 0.5 ltr in the same time, having said that we prob do diff mileages, my trips are mostly short journeys

1 litre per 1000m (for any car) is usually considered at the very edge of 'acceptability'. Obviously, forged piston motors will invariably suffer this moreso than non-forged ones.

Anything greater than that rate of consumption, then I'd say the motor has issues.... Or the manufacturers are taking the piss with their engine building 'techniques' these days! lol.

Am currently running a Vectra VXR (which is an absolute hoot) but have had my heart set on an STI Hatch for sometime. Finally found a 10 plate for sale at a Nissan dealer near Oxford, and was about to take the plunge until I saw this thread!!!

I do about 20,000 miles a year with work, so I really need to be sure I don't regret changing.

My head is telling me to walk away now, so can any of you good folk out there help me with some advice?? Really want the Scooby if I'm honest, but I don't want the hassle obviously that some of you have had.....

im on a new saloon and ive done just short of 13k trouble free been bullet proof really.

I also read this when i had my WRX-S and i did 14k in that all within a year, no issues at all.

Im unsure what your buying but ive just seen a red saloon on Ebay for 25k brand new which annoys me cos we all payed a fair bit more than that

my dealer has a 10 plate in red 330R model for 21k hatch last years model

mine has 39000 on the clock is an 08 plate sti like my scoobys before this it has never missed a beat and does not use any oil
and i dont drive like a angel :nono:

Has anyone tried claiming against Subaru's 1 year extended warranty for a failed engine? I was interested in a 2008 STi hatch but have obvious concerns given the all the reported engine failures. When I looked at a hatch at a local Subaru dealer they advised me that all their cars have FSSH and would be serviced before sale (to include the revised map, if not already in place, I presume) and would come with a 1 year Subaru warranty. I'm now wondering is this 1 year warranty actually provided by Subaru or do they simply buy a warranty from one of the warranty companies and pass it on to the customer?

If it's a Subaru proven car it should come with a Subaru warranty.

06/07 Hawkeye's are more likely to have head gasket issues, with a few miles on, although they do have ring land failure like the hatches, but with a lot more miles on them.
Buy a 2.0 JDM model, almost bomb proof.

GB270 is a 2.5 uk WRX!
I haven't read many WRX's suffering failures, that are normally accustom to the STi!

The only issues seem to be;
MY 06 2.5 STi, suffered HG failure, which was worked on by Subaru and does't seem to be so much of an issue on the MY07 STi.

MY08 2.5 STi appeared to suffer piston/ringlad failure.

No JDM 2.0's have any reported issues!

Not every STi 2008-2010 has problems.

If still under warranty it'll get sorted anyway. ;)

mind dont let it put you off ive had 2 2.5s and both been perfect and done over 30k

2 things to bare in mind

the head gasket issue was on the early hawks and was so i read fixed with a new gasket of differing design, and not a common thing on the later model

As for the ringland, dont let the forums put you off, alot of them although a massive debate have been mapped or modded, dont get me wrong some of them have indeed gone stock, but when i bought mine i rang 6 dealers and spoke to service at all, all said that the main issue was tinkering, or the intial recall MAP subaru did on the early 08s.

Subarus are one of those cars people buy to Mod well it was the case in the old days, but as the emission laws get stronger Subaru suffer and have to tighten their belts, so how we modded in the days of old we cant as much now.

If your hearts on a hatch buy one and have forged pistons and youll be good to go for a while as long as you dont tend to track or drive like a 14 year old car jacker.

I did hear on the grapevine that a 2.0 hatch jdm has gone pop in this country

if you have problems you're unlucky, they'll be plenty of cars otthere running around fine.
When you think how many cars are out there.. not everyone is on SN telling you of the problems they've had, nor are they telling you their car is running fine.

If my dad/mum had a scoob.. they wouldn't be on SN.

Sorry 4 l8 reply to your question on sti engine troubles. I see u have found a 10 plate, be carefull that it is not modified in any way as the nice Warranty will b as usefull as old chip paper to u if u have a problem. I walked in to my STI thinking that it was like the old ones that were so reliable but later found to my cost that this is not always the case now. There has been problems with pistons and some cars had not got an ecu upgrade fitted and mine was one of them. it was a known problem but us owners r now left to pay for the design fault in most cases. :brickwall

Three rules to bear in mind when owning a 2.5 Sti :-

1/ Always fill up with 98+ octane fuel.
2/ Don't permanently drive with the rev counter needle in the right hand side of the gauge.
3/ Keep the BHP to less than 340.

Follow these rules and it's long odds against having any problems with engine failure.
