ah ha, found this whilst searching through the event logs

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSADC
Event Category: LDAP Operations
Event ID: 8026
Date: 04/12/2003
Time: 14:54:25
User: N/A
Computer: SVR-SCO-EX1
Description:
LDAP Bind was unsuccessful on directory rdf-sco-mail for distinguished name 'RDF-SCO\administrator'. Directory returned error:[0x51] Server Down. (Connection Agreement 'Users: livingston.rdfgroup.com - Scotland\RDF Consulting' #3728)

Now I can check the CA and re-enter the username/password and it connects OK. I've restarted the service to see if the error is constant.

Cheers Nick,

I'll give you a ring tomorrow if your free. I've had enough for today and I'm off for a run to clear my head.

found this MS doc with exactly the error code you are getting....
have you just rolled-up/hotfixed that NT4 server with 5.5 on by any chance?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B322051

surely can't be this, check further down the page as it list your EXACT error.

can't be, am I barking up the wrong tree completly:eek:

from near the bottom:

MORE INFORMATION
This problem may occur with Microsoft Exchange 5.5 administrative programs connecting to Exchange 5.5-based servers. This causes the following error message:

DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM
When you join a Microsoft Exchange 2000 server to a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 site, you may receive the following error message:

Error code 0XC103FC93 (64659): Could not bind to the Microsoft Exchange Directory server EXCHANGE1."

I wouldn't normally posted this but the error codes & situation is EXACTLY as above, but 2000 instead of 2003

Sorry haven't had a chance to reply as they do tend to watch the surfing logs.

Thought it was a DC that you were trying to install Ex2k3 onto, hence my thinking about LDAP! Seems like you are getting somewhere - I had a thought about your DNS/WINS configuration whilst reading this afternoon's posts, but it seems like that thought has been had!

ozzy 04 December 2003 08:27 PM

Lazy, moi? You couldn't even make those links clicky for me ;):p

I spotted those articles the other day. I've been trying to check what level of encryption we're running and found out that it's the std service pack that's installed. I've downloaded the 128-bit version, so I'll apply that this evening and hopefully that'll fix it.

Well, I've just patched the old 5.5 server with the 128-bit service pack and it's working :D ..... well, almost :(

I get past the error message (thanks Nick), then it asks me for a service account username/password, but the fields are all greyed out so I can't enter anything.

This installation has got it in for me big time.

WELL THERE YA GO MATE......(oops caps lock off:D)
I honestly thought it was DNS at first...
ps - I've just discovered (well, I modified a google search I found, not not al my own work) a superb way of migrating multiple NT4/2000 domains into new 2003 forest using new hardware WITHOUT using ADMT or any migration tools or the need for roaming profile servers etc;) & it works as well.
So if you need any help let me know, or have you done it already now ??
Havn't migrated exchange 5.5 to 2003 yet as I am doing a fresh install & we are currently on pop3:eek:

you have my moby number now, give me a bell if you need anything else.

Thanks Nick.

I restarted the ADC last night (as it was failing the Bind too). Came in this morning and ran through the setup routine. Now it's working and busy copying all the installation files.

So far so good. I'll move my own mailbox to the new server and see how it runs before I start migrating everyone else over. Although we have around 100 mailboxes, the vast majority are all contractors so they rarely keep a lot of e-mails.

For most of them I could save their mail to a PST and import them into a new mailbox if I had to.

Thanks again for all your help,
Stefan
