Which mini is this exactly? The new fastback one (2011)? Says 0-60 of 6.9 secs and 208 hp in Autocar. Weight of old Mini was ~1210 kg. Fast but hardly epic.

Guys, i think what we are all forgetting about earlier cars was just how SMALL and LIGHT they were.

The MkI Escort, for example, weighed in at only 745kg to the 1150kg of the present day Fiesta, with all seats etc, and was SMALLER than a present day Fiesta, well under 4m to the Fiesta's 80mm over 4m

The present day Fiesta has 120bhp, so 105bhp/tonne
The Escort, with 120bhp, would have had 160bhp/tonne. Witness the Twin Cams.......

My Lotus Cortina MkII had 130bhp in a car that weighed only 850kg and was 5 inches SHORTER than the present Fiesta.

Mind........I DO remember my dad's Cortina 2.0 GXL which would do 0-60 in 10.1 seconds and THAT was regarded as brilliant, Cars and Car Conversions carried an article.

Whilst on the nostagia kick (or is it neuralgia) the ultimate ahead of its time car for me was the Lotus Elan, 6s to60 and would pull 1g on corners with 4.5J rims !!
Moved onto tehm after the Mk 1 Mini !!
