...you are missing another dimension - a lot of people use Facebook for business network contacts.

I reckon 85% of my FB community is there because networking reasons.

But that wasn't the topic - it also wasn't who are your famous friends on Facebook :p

And I thought you were the pedant ;)

tony de wonderful 07 October 2011 11:12 PM

I've had several 'culls' of facebook 'friends'. Too many were just twats I knew from work. :D I try and keep it a small group of close friends, even if I don't see them much now, like people I was close to at uni.

I suppose it has a semi-networking function, but I keep the few work people on there because they are more friends than just commodities to exploited for 'networking'.

I did have loads of work people like I said at one stage, but I found myself despising the whole networking thing, it just has no personnel integrity. If I pretend to be mates with people because of who they know, then I am just commodifying people, they are not 'friends', just things to be used. Of course with 'networking' they charade is never to break the 4th wall and let anyone know you are actually 'networking' LOL.

Anyway the industry I work on is bloody horrible anyway. I just earn money from it and try and keep it and my real life separate.

Oh i am, Trout :D

But surely you're using LinkedIn for networking reasons now? :)

I reckon if everybody who hadn't talked to a "friend" for over a month, dammit make it two months, had that "friend" deleted automatically, the number of "friends" would reduce by over 50%. Top of my head statistic but that's my guess. :)

Trout 07 October 2011 11:15 PM

Get with the times Tel.

Linkedin is so corporate job seekers!

Facebook and Twitter are where you can drive revenue - not Linkedin.

PS - it would be nearer 90% for the heavy duty friends lists

TelBoy 07 October 2011 11:23 PM

Fair enough, i stand corrected. I don't have to use phoney friends to generate business. But then that's what business has always been all about i suppose. All good. :)

Yeah linkedin is great if you want to advertise yourself to headhunters/recruitment pimps. That assumes you are wage-slave material though. :lol1:

That's about it though for it.

I hope not - that's what I want to sell them :)

Didn't scientists once figure out that a functional 'community' can't have more than about 90 members or something?

Trout 07 October 2011 11:54 PM

There was something in the Dance through the Hall of Time that you only get to know 400 people in your whole life.

Kind of random but i got a request from Sarah Summer, who used to be called Dalton, the sister of a lad from school, I can't say I know her and all I remember her from if being at this lads (epic) party aged 15 and looking up to come face to face with my hero, Barney from New Order. Apparently my mates sister was going out with him.

So, now she is married to him and twenty five years later she adds me as a th friend even though I can't remeber her, wasn't going to say no, maybe she thinks I am someone else but I am friends with her brother and she is friends with a few of my mates from school.

Bit confused really, confusion yeah, confusion.......

why is it that those who *have* these so called famous friends on FB, love to let everyone know, at every possible opportunity, that they have these famous friends on FB...........

Peedee 08 October 2011 06:17 PM

Wow, I can't believe how many of you have famous 'friends' lol!!

Ever thought they just accept your friend request to make it look as though they have loads of friends??

Lets be honest, how many people actually have more than about 30 people max that are actual 'friends'?? I had over 300 people on my facebook a while ago, then culled everyone that I hadn't spoken to or seen for years, or who I actually disliked (which was a lot when I took a closer look). I ended up with about 70 odd, of which I would say only about 20 - 25 are proper friends, and the rest just hotties that I like to check out every now and then (like most normal red-blooded males do, even though you probably won't admit it lol).
