I know that when I leave there and go home, I remember why I moved from West to North!

I know what you mean about worrying about your kid's future - who doesn't, but decent people leaving the UK isn't going do any good for the place.

Besides, Oz may have the weather, oh and the girls, but they're not always welcoming to immigrants...

Devildog has kindly explained that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Apparently it's fine to come up with slanderous generalisations about foreigners on NSR, but not permitted to do so for the natives. Well, I call that bollox. The irony of it all? Our forefathers fought, and you yourself served, for the right to freedom of expression. I'm going to use it.

"No dogs, blacks, or Irish." Ring any bells?

My wife is an immigrant, and she's received quite a few insults from the locals here. Imagine if she was Muslim or Polish - how much baseless crap would she have to put up with on NSR, and perhaps also in the streets of the UK? Apparently these people, time and again, are responsible for the decline of British society - while the Brits carry on, behaving as I have described them above, regardless.

This article blows up one or two more myths (mentions others as well but doesn't accurately deconstruct them, unfortunately):
They come over here ... | Special reports | Guardian Unlimited

I appreciate what you are saying and to be fair I agree with a lot of what you say.

I have never complained about individual immigrants, especially those who work hard, are good mannered and a joy to meet. I would be a hypochrite to do so anyway since my mother was Austrian and arrived in this country before WW2. She had to put up with a lot of prejudice since many people suspected her of being a German spy. As did her parents, she hated Hitler and his cohorts.

My worries are over mass uncontrolled immigration which is overloading our infrastructure unfairly.

I still hold on to the fact that I believe that the basic British ideals do still exist in this country despite what has happened over recent years. I really live in hope that we may return to those ideals.

I am sorry if my initial reply appeared to misjudge you.

Les :)

Wow, I bet your mother suffered. "Respect" as the youth of today would say.

It won't be the last time we have a heated debate Les :D Stay with us, we'll put the world to rights eventually :)

All the best

Les :)

I hope so too, Les, but perhaps my cynical attitude and (relative) youth lead me the differing view that "the lunatics really are taking over the asylum (seekers ? )"

When corruption is rife in all forms of governance, from town councils to Whitehall, what chance for society?

Granted (and generally speaking) its not so bad in Scotland as in England, but then population density is different here. It still formed part of my decision to move from what many would consider a good area West of Glasgow to somewhere rather more Northerly.

Was at the cinema recently, and the only two seats left (we were late) were beside a couple of young ish teenage boys. Used the usual attitude of the central belt, I was thinking "here we go".

To say I was shocked when the one beside me entered into a very polite dialogue and offered me some of his (admittedly large) bag of maltesers (I think it was) was an understatement. It did, however, reinforce the fact that we had moved to a much better place.

The fact I was shocked, in retrospect, saddened me. Why? Because as a society we've come to expect at best, indifference in all walks of life.

read any newspaper, watch any current affairs programme, walk down many a road and the degeneration of society is everywhere.

On reflection, I'm not that cynical at all. I'm just a realist.

It does help when you do suddenly see a bit of real good manners and thought for others as you say.

I agree in general with what you say and I am not a stargazer but as you say, also more of a realist. It is very difficult to reverse the bad things which have become established these days, but I will still not lose hope!

I continue to believe that the good old British attitudes are still there, under the surface somewhere. We just need that good leader to smoke it all out again.

Maybe we should give that willing volunteer Pete Lewis a go! :D

I'm a POHM living in Aus, you think Labour has screwed up the UK (Actually it's due to Govn'ts over the last 50-60 years that has lead to the state the UK is in right now)? We now have a Labour federal Govn't. All state and teritory Govn't are Labour. The Govn't in New Zealand is labour. It's the same in both Aus and NZ too, the locals bitching about immigrants. I am an immigrant to both Aus and NZ, my wife is African, she too is an immigrant.

But back to the topic, no politician will do anything to save the planet. The planet is doomed any way, that big yellow ball in the sky will eventuall consume this planet. All Govn'ts will do is tax all activity. I'll be laughing my head off in 2011 when we head in to another "global cooling" scare similar to that of the 70's. The media have been preaching doom and gloom since the late 1800's.

i like it when people have a bright outlook on life! :wonder:

Klaatu 27 November 2007 09:58 PM

My life is great downunder, I just dislike poeple bitching about migrants. I also dislike Govn'ts and media "brain washing" the masses regrading climate change.

For those who wish to study climate change, turn the TV and PC off and go to a library for some real facts. Remember the IPCC is a politically sponsored and motivated group of administrators and politicians. Consensus is not science.
