Ah nice, what power levels are they good for are they similar to the STi 6 speed?

Subaru Collector 555.

Completely different breed of gearbox and not really like any subaru box.
People are running 900hp through them with no problem and running 9 second 1/4's so stronger box than STI, and with more gear ratio options too.

Why has no body told me this before! :cuckoo:
Definently something I'm gonna consider with my WRX and will save me buying a used STi six speedfor £1500+ and hoping it doesnt brake.

Btw if you ever want to go for 4/500hp levels check out Kinugawa on Ebay and they do some good turbos which can handle those levels are only cost £3-500 new. Only ever heard good reviews about them and there is a lot of variety.

Thanks for that,

Subaru Collector 555.

Very interesting the vag 6 speed good skills!! How heavy is the box in comparison to the impreza 6 speed??

Also you could start doing a kit and sell as viable option to the sti 6 speed!!

Box is heavier than impreza 5 speed but lighter than the subaru 6 speed. Rear diff is aluminium and rear x member has had a fair chunk off it so probably same weight as 5 speed setup now.
No kits will be getting made! Would probably end up dearer than buying an STI box if I had to charge for my time and materials.
There is a thread on SN with the gearbox build.

Wastegate hole opened up, not perfectly round, but I didn't want to touch the bit that was thin already.

So after a bit of thought and some financial maths I have decided to go standalone ecu.
Familiarity with the system, ease of mapping and the amount of options available were factors, cost was also a large deciding factor. So the piggyback will be comming off (ideal for anyone looking to map a classic or newage even for that matter) and I will be splicing the standalone into my loom.
Already had it fired up and communicating in the living room, loaded a few basic settings and maps to get going.

Nice work as usual :).

Are you doing anything brakes wise as I have an idea for a cheap BBK if you want to PM me as it needs your machining skills.

Nothing planned on the brake front just now, std brakes will stop you quite well once or twice before getting hot, not being a track car and only used for the occasional burst here and there they should be fine for now. Running drilled and grooved discs and uprated pads just now too.

Today I stripped my spare 2.0 block. Ready to get the casings, sump, oil pick up cleaned.
Actually very tidy for a 100k engine, very little bearing wear or carbon build up. Just shows that buying an NA engine is a better option if looking for a base to build on.

So the 2.0 NA bottom end, block, crank and rods is the same as a WRX

Interesting.

Should bump the price of NA engines up lol

ScottyPPP 20 December 2014 10:27 PM

Was going to say they look exactly like WRX rods.

I doubt this is a new discovery, I'm sure all the engine rebuilders know exactly what they are looking at.
This is why I would never re grind a crank, why make a sub standard, undersized and potentially softer (surface hardness) crank from a clapped out wrx? When a near mint understressed NA one is exactly the same and just what your looking for

Well it's news to me and coming from the DIY folks (like you and I) this is good news.
