Nice work, coming along nicely now. Although wouldn't you rather have 340 - 350 on a 16G vs 360 on a 20g?
The 16G on my 2.1 is a complete spool monster. Remember this is a TD05 20g not a TD06 20g. It's almost like a "19g" if you like, the compressor wheel is 20g sized (inducer and exducer) but it has a TD05 turbine wheel and 7cm housing (unlike the TD06's 8cm and bigger wheel) in comparison an 18g has the same exhaust wheel and housing as me, but the compressor inducer is slightly smaller, the exducer on the 18g is the same as my 20g and the bigger 20g. So my turbo lys between an 18g and a big 20g. Spool will be similar to an 18g and power will be similar to 18g maybe a bit more. I say 360 hp but that is a conservative estimate, it may well make more, however I doubt it will do 380. A 16g, as good as it is, just won't flow the air, peak power suffers as the air is super heated and the turbo cannot maintain the boost level required, rev limit is also lower. With my forged rods I have no problem with an increase in rev limit to sacrifice a couple hundred RPM spool. My 16g makes 1.5 bar at 3200 My 05 20g used to make 1.3 bar at 3600, albeit with tubular headers, so I expect full boost (a higher boost of 1.5-1.6 bar) t around the same 3600rpm with my ported std manifold. I aim to maintain this boost to the limiter, this is where the power is made with a bigger turbo, sustained high boost, at a lower temp. Also plan on messing around with methanol as an additive, initially as a safeguard and latterly I will put timing in for more power. I have the ability to have map switching on my ecu, so will run two maps, meth and std fuel.... But this will be a while yet! |
Engine build
Hi Boosted
Over on my Thread (General Tech), for WRX engine Recon Choice I can post pictures coming in from Andy at wmsracing on the Sti bottom end build he's doing for me. Its also a 2.0 we could have a look how your TD05 20G compares to my TD05 16G, I won't be done till Summer but a R&R graph will be interesting. Doing anything on your heads , just a clean up / lap the valves ? |

Only problem is not many RR's local, dragstrip is probably the best comparison for me, I will run both 16g and 20g this year and compare times. RE heads, nope just bolting them on. If the valves come out then your looking at valve stem seals and a re shim, especially if your lapping them. I don't lap valves ever, not even new ones unless I have a major pitting problem. |
Bring it down to Surrey Rolling Road.
I need to stick mine back on now it's tuned properly and see what it makes. Should be 340 at least and 330+ lbs ft. |

Yes should be interesting, I am currently running a 16g at 1.45 bar, no RR printout however.

Ha no that's not me!
Remember you don't even have a "big 16g" yours is a small 16g. The big 16g is found on evo's and DSM's Compressor maps are a good way of working out appropriate turbo sizing and how efficient the turbo will be running. |
Linksfahrer use this to work out cfm;

My cousin still lives in Moulsham street. Ha, good ol' Moulsham Street - used to frequent it a lot back in the early 90s. |

My Turbo code TRB (B) big came in a kit together with the large TMIC but Throw the MBC away ( it cost me my bottom end. ) The special $ Turbo kit & TMIC is no longer available but separately Intercooler+Y Pipe Kit For SUBARU WRX/STI 02-07 Item Code: KIT-WRX-Y-P-IC004-A but the turbo is sol also in the FMIC kit TD05 Big 16G Turbo and Front Mount Intercooler Upgrade Kit Item Code: TRB-KIT-WRX0207-BOV017-CT-IC0058-KIT In the link I sent you also will find a calculator for the CFM was also listed, I did the calcs all through to come out with 336 bhp for mine, (threory) yours will run a lot cooler , I think >400 bhp is possible :thumb: a bit over 380 is probably where you are at 21 psi. Yeah, I literally just read on the net that it was demolished in the latter half of 2013. Didn't realise.

Quite, but on what fuel? You must ask yourself!
You will be able to go even further twin mapped with Methanol , Im also twin mapped for 98 at the moment at 1.2 bar but can run 1.45 bar with 102 octan for a bit of safety. I calculated the 336bhp on 90% effiecent , but turbo's are probably a bit better as you know , a theoretical flow of 550 CFM on the TD05 B 16G is however never going to be a good idea for my car , the heat generated is a problem. The PR will have to be about 2.2 and even that's 21.5 psi. So Im never getting over 68% on the graph. Yours will be at 76% , so a lot less heat , = more latitude for more power . Seems to me the 20g is an ideal cheap turbo ( <$300 on CX race site ) for drag strip use , where you hold the revs up beforea green light , however for road use about town , its got to spin up first not my cup of tea, neither particulary is the turbo I have or the huge TMIC the small 16G is better for spool and the smaller internal volume of say an Sti V8 TMIC might be better for a good around town drive. I will test that idea with a quick swap back to the much smaller WRX one. ahh problems problems. First one is get the engine back in. |
Graph from the last time mine was on a dyno, TD05-16g.

Nice power. Could do with a tune to sort the AFR, 10.2:1 is a bit rich lol! In fact it's in the tens all the way in boost, I would think 11.5:1 would be better for it, make even more power! 👍

The problem for 16G here still is the roll off after 6500. Dytch has that covered above Heads / flow / Larger Turbo etc etc. |
