Can't think on any.....as 4WD cars are banned from most of the competitions now, as posted above, as the 2WD cars were getting slaughtered.

Although having said all that if i was going to be doing a track car i'd do a 205

I suppose the answer to this one depends on everyones mentality towards what they have. I always buy the best stuff I can, whether its electricals, car stuff, clothes, furniture etc etc. I'm not a person to waste money, but if I want something I will always buy the best available and never opt for the cheaper option, unless I knew it did a better job than the dearer option.

I may not use the item to its full potential, but its nice to know I have the best that I can afford, and have the option of using it if I need/want to. I suppose this applies to my cars - my 205 is fully rigged up and quick, but I only do maybe 1k miles a year in it, plus i'm a slow driver so never use it to its potential :D But... I have the option to if I want to.

As for opinions, I respect others opinions and it makes life much better that we all differ in our outlook, I don't spend much time worrying about opinions that differ to mine, but I do take them on board. :) I also think thread replies could be worded better than "bull****" in reply to posts, or someone stating that cost alone is the issue. I'm always wary of people that go on about money, or slate others saying they "can't afford" to do something, its so subjective.

Just one point on the 4WD race series thing - if 4WD was the king on track, all the single seat formulas, including F1 would be 4WD. :)

It's not really a Championship, but the Time Attack 2006 had a good mix of 4WD and 2WD cars. The 4WD cars came out on top - even compared to the open wheel class (Supercharged Ariel Atoms, etc) - although it was very close.

I'd like to see a Supercharged/ Turbocharged Honda engined Elise/ Exige in the Time Attack 2007 - that would make for an interesting battle, as they were very quick in the Tuner GP last year - quicker than the Scoobies and 997 Turbos.

I like the fact a tweaked GT3RS with only 400bhp managed to come 2nd by .08 of a sec for the rockingham round......I bet the skyline had more than 200 bhp more.

More than likely down to the driver. Hence Gareth Lloyd beating Simon Norris by so much, even though he has a lot less power and still had 4wd and a turbo

Thats the problem with most cars, and the reason mine has only been on track once.....the driver!!! :D

The car Lloyd was driving must have had stupid power, he's a good driver, but not that good!!

5 secs around a 1.30 lap!!!

6 seconds quicker than Norris though. Don't think Lloyd's car is even anywhere close to the power of the Norris Evo.

(FWIW i was told Gareth Lloyd is a very good driver)

I am sure he is good, but to be 5 secs quicker around a 1.30 lap there is something wrong.

I'd like to think Herr Schumacher could not go around the same track (1.30 lap) 5 secs faster than me in the same car!....maybe he could, but you get my point.

I know what you mean, and the fact he can beat those guys by 5 secs does make something look out of place.

Although i believe a few of those cars are too powerful for the track anyway. The Litchfields car is a prime examples that it's not all down to power, but the setup and the driver.

Some circuits are more handling based than power based. The GT3 is nimble and will get round there much better as shown.

Other circuits like Snetterton, and Silverstone are power friendly. Over the course of a series, these tend to even out.

To answer the original question from my view point.

I used to use my Suabru on track but it proved very expensive to do so. I bought a 205GTi and turned it into a dedicated track car. I can honestly say the 205 was far more rewarding to drive than the Subaru. Quicker NO, but more fun YES.

If money was no object then I would suggest Subarus would be used on-track more. However for me it was an issue. It wore 4 tyres at a time and one tyre cost more than a full set on my 205. Don't even get me started on brakes :D :D :D

A well sorted Subaru is a good track car, but for the cost of a decent set of brakes (which is imperative, because the std ones are crap) you can pretty much buy and prepare a Golf / 205 including a cage and other essentials.

I always regret not taking my old car on the track. Its something i've wanted to do for a long time.

You dont HAVE TO hammer your car around the track for the best times, when i go i'll be changing gear at probly 6k, not to hard on the brakes, and just enjoy being able to drive quick on a mega smooth track :) Fortunatly for me Oulten Park is a 25min drive away too. By the time i get to doing it i'll have some new alloys, so will most likely throw the standard wheels and tyres on therefore not having to worry so much about expensive rubber costs.

Having never done a trackday i'll probly go on a beginners day where they have limited numbers on the track and you can take an instructor out with you to give you tips and help :)

well said - they are great for learning about your car in a safe environment and you are only as hard on the car as you want. I rarely take mine about 6000 rpm as there is no real need (or point) in mine as main power band is 2500-5500.

it is worth putting better pads in though as the std pads are awful :)

Exactly, theres still a lot i need and want to learn about driving my Impreza, and a lot of that i wont be able to learn on the road (unless i brake the law quite a lot) and run the risk of injuring other people as well as myself if the worst occoured.

Im waiting till i've done got some better suspension and some gauges in my car, then i'll be pretty ready for a track, may just finish the standard pads off and replace them for upgraded ones after the trackday, as long as i dont get to close behind people which i have no intention of doing anyway i should be ok :)

:thumb: I do loads of track days in my Sti RA. Normally costs me a tank of petrol, and I buy part worn tyres at £20 each fitted. Normally I get 2 sometimes 3 events out of a set, dependent on track and surface.

Try Blyton Airfield near Gainsborough £50 for all day open pit lane. See their Website: Rally Drive Its a bargain and a great starter track. Race till your knackered.
