I undertsand the G60 can be pretty reliable as it uses the 8valve bottom end....and the supercharger is not particularly unreliable and rebuild not too expensive.

Torpid 11 January 2007 02:01 PM

The reason they had a reputation for unreliability is that owners neglected them. Serviced and upgraded sensibly they are extremely reliable and give good power.

I always wanted a G60 syncro but never found the right car.

I should change the thread title to 'Best Golf?'

Sorry mate i'm guilty of doing this:(

Matteeboy 11 January 2007 02:20 PM

The G60 engine is known for it's fragility but I've never driven one but the G60 Limited is a sexy sexy car. Guess if it's looked after it's a bit like a German Integrale Evo.
Always hankered after a very sorted and modded (new engine, new brakes, etc) mk1 myself but they're hard to find.

Can imagine the 150PD would make for some interesting driving in a mk2 (my Ashtray kicks out the same power and torque as one, albeit in a slightly more refined manner) - It would just sound SO odd!

Anyway, get a GTI-6 an be done with it Chris!

No it isn't. The G60 engine isn't known for it's fragility. The G-Lader is known for self destructing due to neglect which I'd already explained above.

To 95% of the driving population, that's fragile then -
whether it be a part of the engine or the whole lot.
To those that look after their engines it's not.

Don't forget cars have been "drive and forget" for a long time now.
Check any VW website, look at the history and see how many G60s have gone pop.
Also look at any advise on the engine - Always glowing but cautious.

Now having agreed on a couple of points earlier, I can't be bothered to launch into another debate.
My brain hurts.

Thinking is taxing for some people, particularly when they aren't used to it. The brain is like any muscle, neglect it on a regular basis and when you come to exert it the effort will cause you pain. Best you take some time off and go back to your normal mode of operation.:)

Calling me a thickie?

I can assure you that despite multiple faults, being retarded is not one of them.
Unless the Engineering degree I got was actually secretly easy...:cuckoo:

AND I'm a Soduko ninja.

AND I can sometimes do the Independent crossword.

AND...AND...Okay, I'm a thicko  :lol1:

GrahamG 11 January 2007 03:13 PM

I'm looking at a Saxo VTS for a track car at the mo... they are cheap... older ones look ok...

only problem is if they are modded they get a bad rep, which is fair enough.

You should have followed your own advice there 'purvis'.

Made any decision on what you're going to go for yet?

...........and regarding the scrumpy drinker, no I'm not calling you stupid. If I was I'd have said:

"farmer boy, you're stupid"

Gear Head 11 January 2007 03:38 PM

Think it will be a 306gti-6, but i'd rather spend more money on a good one, then I start getting into 172 cup territory!

davyboy 11 January 2007 03:42 PM

But then you'll say, "for a bit more I could get a 182".

You have set a budget, now stick to it :thumb:

Gear Head 11 January 2007 03:42 PM

I know I know. :D

Gear Head 11 January 2007 04:14 PM

Yes but I think that it could have been done in 1 page! :thumb:

You have to admit Torpid, whichever thread you post on, that thread always ends up in a very confused and 'off-topic' state.

delcbr 11 January 2007 04:25 PM

It's called 'evolution' and is one of the most appealing and interesting things about discourse in whatever mode it's taking place.

Bat-Fink 11 January 2007 04:26 PM

I hope you've followed your own advice, it gives me great pleasure to send idiots like you into 'ostrich mode' by introducing you to new concepts such as 'debate'.
