500quid takes it.... and only slightly lighter than the jdm sti but just as fast despite being nearly 140 bhp down?? it just doesnt add up to me:wonder: according to parkers the wrx saloon is 1395kg,the wrx estate 1410kg and the sti 1470kg. so do you need 140bhp to shift 60kg?? |
Think we're all missing a trick here, the clear answer is to drop a k series lump into a UK WRX.

at a rough guess id say 150bhp so would this be enough to keep up with a 266 bhp wrx wagon as id say the engine would be considerably lighter due to losing the turbo, intercooler and associated parts. so in theory if the 150 bhp k series lump was 70 kg lighter you could keep up with a 400 bhp jdm sti,i guess this makes sense as a rover 25 is lighter than a wagon and thats faster than a ferrari. |

Nope, only 103bhp and he blew the HG whilst racing it.....You couldn't make this sh*t up! :lol1:
Well, he could. |

the figures just dont seem to add up and basing it on my experiences of both wrx and sti it doesnt make sense. can anyone help? |
His Wagon must be fast I mean look at this comment from 2011 thread.

Did they do a Ferrari 460??? Maybe its the prototype Ferrari had to drop due to it getting dusted by Ditchmyster Hamilton in the 103bhp Rover!!:wonder:

all i can think was we had a faulty wrx as ours was nowhere near as fast as the sti hence it was sold.

The irony of the inevitable WRX v STI comparisons (where the WRX usually sneaks the 0-60 but the STI the track times) is the STI invariably has over 15-20% extra power.
Now a 265bhp WRX PPP v 265 bhp STI test would be something to behold. Or maybe even turn the tide and pit a 305bhp WRX v a 265BHP STI. Most Evo and Subaru owners tune to 350bhp on average and at those levels the WRX is king. I'd love to know the accurate drivetrain losses of the EVO's and Scoobs as I think the WRX will be drastically less. I'm the thinking the differences could be as high as 6-8%. why would the drivetrain loss be less in a wrx?? please tell this should be good |

Gear ratio's only benefit the wrx in 1st and 2nd, the then tighter ratio's of the 6 speed give the STI an advantage, still, the highest 0-60 times on standard (or PPP'd cars) are not held by WRX's but instead by STI's. |

why would the drivetrain loss be less in a wrx?? please tell this should be good Rotational mass has a big effect on transmission losses. I'm not 100% on each item but I think the STI has an heavier flywheel, clutch, gearbox, hubs, disks and wheels. |

350lbft. Though some SN members have pushed well over 400lbft on a 5 speed. With uprated piston rings the WRX could theoretically operate at power levels around 400bhp if not more. Rods would also be safe if torque was kept below the 350lbt danger zone. To do this a bigger turbo running lower boost would be needed, there's also other mods to lower torque such as enlarged intercooler and turbo intake pipe.

In theory both boxes are useless for the max power levels of 350hp and 450hp respectively. I've raced two SN members STI's that had well over 500Bhp and I beat their 0-60 foot on both accounts. They were just wheel spinning and loosing time with constant shifting, getting into 3rd at 40mph with over 500bhp!!!!!! Crazy. Great car for 60 mph+ all around the Nurburgring but get next to my 300lbtf WRX at the (non-stickied tarmac) traffic lights in the real world and you are 3 car lengths behind in no time every time. Especially if you don't launch hard with a large-laggy turbo, like a lot of arrogant STI owners next to a sleeper WRX! |

I'm getting a small diesel to have more mpg, but I'm scared I may make a thread that the mpg is too much to handle......
Another turbocharged car mpg thread :brickwall |

Depends on power levels, I've seen the short ratios of the STI cause major headaches for Drag STI's, big Arf even told me once that he needed a 5 speed equivalent that was strong enough.

oh so nothing serious then just change the piston rings....how long does this minor job take?? then detune it so the weak internals can cope with the torque:lol1:
Obviously with higher transmission losses and higher curb weight an STI can handle a bit more torque, in fact torque is crucial to the STI. That reminds me, I think the wider track of the STI also adds extra transmission losses over the WRX. |

Something that tempts me. a 430bhp WRX would raise a few eyebrows at the strip and as I'm currently wheelspinning off the line with just 300lbft the lower torque would be much appreciated.

just to add some more fuel to the fire
my wee classic turbo does 67mph in 2nd gear :) |

Tom, in 20 years of driving I've never had someone next to me at the lights or in front of me at a junction launch at 4,000-6.000rpm. Do you live in California? No wonder the STI needs stronger components if those with WRX denial are sat on the limiter at a red light for 5 minutes. |
