FAO those with UPVC doors or Yale type locks
I've just been made aware of some new methods thieves are using to gain entry to houses with pin & tumbler style locks. I won't go into too much detail, but a quick search for "Bump Key" will reveal all, especially the HOW TO videos on YouTube  This technique is so prolific in Germany that the Police have used national television to alert everyone to the ease at which a thief can gain access to your property. Also, as there is no evidence of forced entry your insurance company is likely to not pay out on the grounds of suspected fraud, or complacency (left doors open).
If you solely rely on these locks then I think you need to upgrade NOW! I've posted this as the thieves are already aware, the general public however are not. If no-one tells them they will only find out when it is too late. |

As I said, do your own searches on youtube.com

Very worrying that is:eek2: :eek2: ,glad too say i dont have locks like that. Mick |
Hello
Locks have always been like that. I have a Pick gun that I bought years and years ago. Place it in the lock a few presses and it springs open. So nothing new really. Steve |
This is nothing new. It's been around since time begun and is at least 8 years old if not more. It used to be called raking. In fact, you can buy electronic ones which vibrate inside the lock. These are even quicker.

Bumping lock tumblers isn't new, the principle has been around for many years, just like opening some barrel locks with bic pens or opening padlocks with shims.
I've been messing about with locks for years, the internet just made it a lot easier for the information to be spread about. Edit, lol both in before me. ;) |
Surely this can and is being done with car locks too?

No, car locks work differently. They don't have the same tumbler as a 'front-door' type lock so you can't use the same method. Steve |
Ok so whether the idea is new or not, what can you do about it? Ihave upvc doors front and back so guess who wont be sleeping tonight?
Anyone want to trade three cats for a flesh ripping doberman? |
Brumdaisy,
Don't worry about this, really don't. This has been known to thieves in the UK for a long long time. This has been public knowledge for a very long time. There is nothing different today than 2 years ago. If they are determined, they will get in no matter what the lock. The weakest point is usually the frame or a window. |

Anyone want to trade three cats for a flesh ripping doberman? Just put a bolt on your door. No picking that (if you are in the house). As above, if someone wants to get into your house they will. Steve |

Boxst, how do you put a bolt on a UPVC panel? Im pretty handy at DIY stuff so having fitted a catflap to a UPVC panel I know theres nowt for screws to grip beyond the thin as fook panel..... to the point that last time I locked myself out the house I just kicked thru the catflap and reached up to take the key out the back door - now I know how easy that was I never leave the key in the back door! |
Great :wonder: Untill you get to a door with a rotwiller sat behind :lol1:
Or a man like me holding a 3iron with a 250+yard swing :norty: |
It may be old news to some, but it is new to others, so the more who are made aware the better.
|
Brum, theres many type of things that can be fitted to doors now .. get down your local b&q or whatever and look in the locks section. even things like those 'rape/alert alarms' can be used.
dont worry tho' like its been said, if anyone really wants to get in anywhere, theres ways and they will.. its not really 'normal' houses they go after, more the big old victorian or the houses down the Roman road in Little Aston :) |
I dunno about locks, but my neighbours had a new uPVC back door that looked bullet-proof to me - locked in four places up the side. But it was popped open with a crow-bar, no probs.
I was working in the garage at the time, not making any noise, and no more than five yards away. Thieving b@stards must have known I was very close by, but I heard nothing  Richard. |
