After getting the alloys off Ebay (brand new 2009 STi Alloys with Brand new tyres for £339)
Attachment 55711

I thought I'll use these as winter wheels, but I want to have a different colour.
I'm looking at Pepermint green as those are the cans of spray they had enough of in a colour I liked :D

This is my DIY thread on how to change their colour :) I'll update as the job progresses.

TOOLS/Materials needed:
120grade wet n dry sand paper, already worn down.
wet/dry sanding pads, already worn down.
degreaser & brake cleaner
etch primer
spray paint
clear lacquer
low tac masking tape
news paper

The alloys had the tyres removed today (thanks to Mr Tire in Nottm)

I've cleaned, sanded and de greased. Dried off and first job is to etch prime the alloys.

once dry I taped up the parts I don't wnat to get spray on..

I've just done the insides this evening and ran out of paint.. so this will allow the inners to dry off before I etch prime the frace of the alloys tomorrow. Also I felt a bit funny with the fumes

Next update tomorrow ;)

I will be following this with interest!

I too have just got some cheap alloys, but unlike yours they have already had a very dodgy paint job.

Painted black but the weights where left on and where the nuts go in they have started to chip off.

I was thinking of painting them and doing a good job as it's going to take a while for the winter/snow tyres I ordered to get here.

What sort of primer have you used?
Does it have the etching in the primer?

Good luck hope you get the desired effect!

What colour is your car? Like to see what it would look like with peppermint green!

1st coat of the green went on this evening on the back part of the rim.

one can is 300ml.. I've used about 1.5 cans to to all 4 alloys on the inside and the back rim of the face.... just to make sure it gets coated up well.

I've put the alloys on an upturned bucket with a piece of card on it, so I can easily rotate the wheel round to spray it.

Plan for tomorrow is to 2nd coat the green I've done tonight, then before its full dry give a spray of the clear coat laquer, so it will fuse to the green paint and dry hard before I start spraying the face of the alloys.

these will be different phil thats for sure m8, looking though pal

alcazar 12 October 2011 09:16 PM

Fluorescent green? Jeez, they'll see you miles off.

Simon C 12 October 2011 09:23 PM

Your making me envious, I'd love to do mine is satin black, but dont have anywhere to spray. Damn living in a flat!

salsa-king 13 October 2011 07:50 AM

get The Wheel Specialist to do them, there should be one local to you as they're up and down the country.

I had the Nottm branch do my wifes car.. top job done :) £235 for 17"

alcazar 13 October 2011 09:06 AM

There's a guy near us does a top job. If it's just spraying and LIGHT marks to remove/fill, he does 'em for £50 a wheel.

Heavy marking and bad kerbing goes at £80 a wheel :(

Or I can get them SPRAYED if I do the prep work for £30 a wheel.

KrisBuc 13 October 2011 02:51 PM

Got the paint from THE RANGE.. It's Holts car paint, (Ford) Signal Green ;)

I managed to spray outside late this yesterday afternoon and got the 2nd and final coat on the inside part of the rim, then left it about 40mins and then 1st coat of lacquer on the inner part too. Hope to get a 2nd and final lacquer coat on the inside rim later today.
Then it'll be the waiting game till the other cans of signal green come in.
The plan will be to give three coats to the main face of the alloys, then two/three coats of lacquer to give them plenty of protection.

I brought them back in the garage to harden off.. left a fan heater on just to warm the air.. to help aid drying ;) all seemed hard this morning when I checked on them.

2nd coat of lacquer went on this afternoon to the inner rims.
Attachment 55732

As I'd ran out of the green spray cans, I nipped out and picked up two more cans from a local car parts shop.. same colour but not same brand of paint. So used one can as a waft 1st coat on the main outside face of the wheel, I'll give them a 2nd coat tomorrow. Then wait till I can get the same brand of paint to finish off the face of the wheels before three lacquer coats go on.
So far I'm happy with how they are building up.

Good choice of colour. Should look good on your white car :thumb:

I did a re-furb on a set of four pots for a mate a while back, in the very same colour, signal green :D

Look good BLU, Ford Signal Green is fab... is it the same as whatt he Ford Fiesta ST came in??

anyway......
came back from Golf at Lunch time.. tee off as 7:17am... it was just light!! lol

Got the wheels out and nibbed down and gave a 2nd coat to the face of the wheels.
Using the different brand paint (AutoCare) isn't as good as the HOLTS spray cans.. but as thse were just the first couple of coats it doesn't matter as when the HOLTS paint comes back into stock I'll be finishing them with that... its so much easier to use as it sprays 'finer' and generally better, if you get what I mean about spraying.

after washing the car this evening I wanted to offer up the alloy to see how it goes with the white car..

I think it will go ace :)

Crofty79 15 October 2011 08:53 PM

Looking good Salsa! nice going!
How many times have you done DIY spraying?
i have struggled when it came to doing a spoiler, it was the lacker which I couldn't get right. I tried the warming the can in hot water.

I digress your wheels look F-ing cool well done!

No, its what they painted mk2 Escort RS2000s in and some Capris iirc!! I had a (primer) grey MK3 Escort in the early 90's that had signal green cloverleafs on it!!
Ford had a good colour choice back in the 60's and 70's. My car is painted in 1968 Ford electric blue ;)

Wheels are gonna look ace, almost match the smiley :D
You do know it doesn't actually need lacquer don't you?

I got two more coats on the face late this afternoon.

2nd coat today went on about 10/15mins after 1st coat, so it allows it to fuse into each other.
I have to say the more coats going on the better they look. :)

The finishing coats of the shine green went on this afternoon... 15mins between coats, then after about 45mins the 1st coat of lacquer went on after removing the newspaper making around the centre.
Two hours later a 2nd coat of lacquer.
Attachment 55741
Attachment 55742

The pictures don't do the finish justice to how good they look :(

A final lacquer coat will go on tomorrow to finish them off. Then a general check round to make sure all is good then I'll leave a few days to harden off before the rubber goes back on.
