Fitted wardrobes-all cr4ppy MDF?
I'm in the market for some fitted wardrobes and called Hammonds around the other day. Even their most expensive range seemed to be made from really light weight MDF.
Is it too much to expect wardrobes that cost thousands to be made from real wood?? |
Ikea

You need a sharps wardrobe. You'll pay through the roof but they are amazing. We have them in 3 of our double rooms and although they are dated they are so robust and apparently we can Chang ethe facias fairly easily.
|
Find yourself a decent joiner and get some made in situ - may cost a tad more but will be better made.
|
Pimmo, some ikea stuff is fine but I want fitted.
Robsy, I'll take a look but I thought Sharps went bust. Zip, I was thinking the same thing actually. I just hope it's not prohibitively expensive |
|
i quite like MDF as a material - and especially for cupboards/wardrobes
if made with ¾ inch heavy duty MDF then painted to a high gloss finish – looks good - and modern Certainly better imo than crappy soft wood, and hardwood seems a bit 18th century to me ask to see some finished samples |
Thanks Don
Hodgy, perhaps it's just the quality of the mdf Hammonds use. My kitchen doors (German made)are mdf no doubt but each one weighs a ton. The Hammond's stuff just feels really lightweight. |

Post a couple of different styles for us all to have a look at, might actually give me some ideas on what is achievable :)

Oak shaker, with inner detail. Very tall units to fit the room. Right hand robe has an angles wall to it's side, so the robe is made to fit, and with the doors closed you wouldn't notice. Center Linen Press, houses a mounted flat screen TV https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...26952522_n.jpg Oak Shaker, with inner detail. Unusual layout due to fitting into an alcove with a sloped ceiling. Top openers have sloped backs, one pair hiding a flat screen TV. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...16402525_n.jpg Painted Ivory, Shaker with inner detail. These are shallow units, so as to not extend beyond the window, plus there is a chimney breast hidden by the units. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...07610571_n.jpg We manufacture in house all our timber and timber painted doors. We can also supply a fully range of vinyl doors, and have just started to do some bedrooms in ultra high gloss acrylic, haven't got any pictures of those yet, but here is a recent bathroom in the acrylic material https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...64569745_n.jpg |
Looks very nice YVM.

Those are bloody fantastic looking, I think number one is what I'm kind only looking for, only longer.
Pisses all over the shop bought stuff, and no doubt would out last the shop bought stuff. What kind of money would option one be Cheers |
Don't forget to include a hidey-hole for Dings stash of porn material.

What kind of money would option one be Cheers We recently, resprayed a set of wardrobes that we had installed 8 years ago, they still looked like new when we removed the doors and panels. (Why spray them, this was in a childs bedroom, and originally where a bright colour, now he has grown up, they have been sprayed to a more mature colour). Regarding cost, I will pm you the details. |

So no problem providing space for any form of stash :thumb: |
we got a guy in to do my mum and dads room
did ann amazing job and it was all custom stuff. was cheaper than sharps and the like ect listen to this though: MAKE SURE YOU LET THE WOOD SEASON! ours shrunk after it was fitted and the doors look odd now where they fitted with less than 1m gap before id suggest leaving a pile off wood in the room for a month or mabey more. might look **** but its worth it |
nice work yvm

In the pic of the bathroom, is that carpet on the floor? Nope, it is cheap vinyl that the customer had their carpet fitters put down. Practical, yes. But it wasn't even good vinyl. This customer has spent a fortune redeveloping their house, with an almost money no object approach, but then insisted on cutting the occasional corner? |
Thanks yvm, it's a strange choice by the homeowner but it's his money I suppose.
Did you make all that bathroom furniture as well? |
cheap vinyl - fair enough
but come on that is still better than the most expensive carpet carpets in bathrooms are naff |
DD,
Yes, our first one in High Gloss Acrylic. These where made with a higher plinth to copy another manufacturers product that the customer had seen. The toilet roll holder was also as they requested. Hodgy, agreed, better than carpet, but there are better looking options available. |
I looked at a company called 'Sliderobes'. Seamed vet good quality. Sadly I ran out of money and bought some free standing (all be it good quality) sliderobes.
