As a chap who knows Martin (MTR) very well I believe all he was trying to do was "help" other scooby owners in making them aware of possible "cheap" parts that may be of interest.....

What do the majority of you do.....

Give him a hard time etc....

Alanjack you should be ashamed of yourself !

Typical of scoobynet these days....

Unhappy

I don't see any sign of anyone giving him a hard time in that thread Mellow, nor was Shaun's post anything other than extremely polite!

I am sure they have to moderate things like that to avoid pissing off people who do have banner ads, not because of some over zealous moderating attitude that is developing here.

I totally agree with regards to banner ads etc....

My point was simply that I believe Martin was making "fellow" enthusiasts aware of potential bargains thinking he was doing a good turn to the "community"

Instead he ended up having to defend himself and make excuses on behalf of the company in question !

I'm in no doubt it will make him think twice again before posting something that may be advantageous to the community again !

Oh....this is the same guy who has organised all the Northern Meets with NM7 just around the corner

Mellow,

I agree with you totally. It looks to me as though somebody was only trying to help! As far as I can tell Robinsons have not asked or tried to promote themselves on this board so why should they need to get a banner ad because one scoobynetter wanted to bring to our attention the posibility of a bargin in what looks like a one off sale!

OTT moderation IMHO

Guy

Tough call. IMO mods can't win in those situations.

If they leave it, banner payers will get the hump.
If they lock it, it appears to be over-moderation.

Lose-lose situation.

I'm sure Shaun and the others would have no objections to this happenning so long as you have a banner ad.

Perhaps MTR went about it the wrong way. A better solution would have been to point ScoobyNetters towards a page of their own detailing their offers ?

I also agree.

Clearly it costs money to maintain Scoobynet and banner ads must be a useful source of revenue though in this case wholly inappropriate.

Surely MTR was trying to do us a favour (and thanks to him for doing so!).

Lets not put people off doing this kind of thing in future it goes against the original spirit of the bbs. On the other hand that Scoobynet is becoming a commercial enterprise and I guess the shopkeepers will jealously guard the shop won't they?

Red face

I disagree DJ - I am fairly sure Martin doesn't work for Robinsons, so where do we draw the line now, and who are the ones getting the hump?

If I want to point people to a really cheap DVD player in Dixons, or a nice cheap Patio set in B&Q am I no longer allowed to do so unless I take out a banner ad first?

Question

Mmmmm....

So does that mean when A.N.Other scoobynetter points us to links to like say.... cheap tyres at places they have found themselves, or even the on-line auction site eBAY that has from time to time Subaru items of interest for sale, that we should expect these places to have a banner ad ?

Fair play - If he doesn't work for Robinsons or has no connection, then no problem.

Generally, its best to make it clear that you have no connection with the company concerned when promoting in that manner. I have to say it did look suspicious - way too much detail.

Brand new WRX MY02 Turbos £19995.

0% finance on all used cars.

Mellow - Now knowing that he has no connection with Robinsons, I don't disagree mate.

Just think he made it look like advertising by over-quoting

They sell aprilia, KTM, Triumph, Peugot, Honda, Gilera, bikes as well as Subaru, Isuzu cars.

Having read the locked thread, i agree with mellow.

I think it is reasonable for members like MTR to point us to sale and discount days oe events.

if you read carefully, it is those who reply who disregard the details of his post such as "please call robinsons for details etc, etc".

probably the error by mtr was to entertain those comments and questions (some were absolutely s1lly) which made the thread sounding commercial where the mods have no choice but to lock it.

come on people, when someone points us to some events I think we should at least have the decency to feel grateful and DIY re contact and finding out information rather putting the person
in such a situation.

I apologize in advance if anyone is offended.

To all concerned,
I do not work for, nor have ever worked for Robinsons. I have been employed by British Aerospace ALL my working life.

I walked in to Robinsons last Sunday and saw the STi wheels on their wheel dispaly stand, and immediately asked to buy them.
They were too much of a bargain to resist.

I was then handed a leaflet showing what was on offer, and I asked what else they were going to be selling.

As I wasn't sure about how to put the leaflet onto the internet, (my son MTR aged 11 suggested I scan it and make it into a photo), I listed info from the leaflet, and items like the wheels and lights that they said they would be selling.

I believe that £595 for a set of wheels that retail at close on £2000 (actually £19XX) and given they only had one other set of the same, but did have other potentially cracking bargains, I would inform an otherwise ignorant (of the sale, not actually) public of a good deal.

A friend once told me never explain yourself, your friends don't need it and your enemies don't believe it.

C'est la vie.

Cheers MTR

Angry

When Ace of Kensington was closing down someone posted "Bargains from Ace of Kensington".

This thread wasn't locked and they weren't told to place a banner add so WTF is going on with the inconsistencies.

There was nothing and is nothing sinister about why the thread was locked. IMHO it seemed quite commercial to me, as the amount of information was in quite some detail.

If I came to the wrong conclusion, I apologise.

Shaun.

Shaun,
Thanks for the apology.
I think that anybody that was interested in buying any goods and had been checking the 'for sale' forums recently will have had ample oppertunity to contact Robinsons and enquire as to what if anything they may have had for sale.

It has made me realise however that even when attempting to convey good news, as I saw it, it can be misconstrued by others.

On Northern Meet 6 I negoitated a 17.5% discount at Robinsons on all parts/accessories/servicing for all attendees, for NO financial gain for myself. Commercial interest? Not for me, and lessened profit for Robinsons.

I didn't even use one of the vouchers myself.
Here it is.

So the ONLY benefactors were the people who came on the run, and subsequently took advantage of the offer.

So it isn't the first time I have tried to 'help'(read, save money) members of this board.

I was in the process of attempting to negotiate another 'deal' for attendees of Northern Meet 7, however under the present circumstances I will eliminate any possible suspicion of colusion between myself and Robinsons and WILL NOT be pursuing any deals for attendees, as the event is being advertised on this BBS, and I wouldn't want people to feel I had any conflict of interests, or was in any way being, quote:'deceitful'.

Cheers MTR

Mellow why should I be ashamed of myself? I admitted to MTR the word deceitful was a poor choice of words but again, all I did was ask someone a question! Surely I can do that on Scoobynet. I would have mailed Martin direct if his address was available, just like I mail you.
Again Sorry for any trouble caused. (and I don't want any fisty cuffs at Birch on the 29th)

I totally agree with Mellows comments.

MTR was only trying to be helpful...its the kinda guy he is. As far as I can see he was just trying to save fellow members some dosh. Also if it wasnt for his enthusiasm we wouldnt have the Northern runs to look forward to either, so get off his back.

As a result of Martins post I managed to get some bits at a greatly reduced price.

With regard to the thread being locked all I can say is that IMHO the jackboot police are getting a bit too big for their uniforms. There have been many past instances where members have posted tips on where to pick up a bargain or two and they were not locked...so why now?

Oh and by the way I also dont work for Robinsons, nor am I related to them, nor am I related to MTR, to the moderators, to the milkman, window cleaner or postman either

MTR see you at the Northern Meet...thats if hopefully you still feel like doing it.

Stratman
