Yes, cam chain and serive history please.

It is a bit "cheap", kind of makes me think something is wrong.

chain change is a myth....ask a BMW specialist if they have ever seen one give up. Like anything, the chain only really needs doing if the car has been poorly maintained. (no implications about above car... many good motors hae had it done anyway...mine has in fact - though not by me)

provided ther tensioner is kept right and everything is serviced regularly should be fine. Good modification and only costs about £40 is to replace tensioner with an E36 jobbie - problem solved.

Cool

Tensioner ought to be replaced if it starts getting noisy. Dupex timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine. (Info from a BMW Main Dealership/Servicing Agent)

image doctor,

I am curious to know, as you evidently have an opinion on this, what would you regard as a reasonable price for one of these, assuming its in good condition and has been looked after?

I was of the understanding that they usually fetch between 7.5 and 10k.

I believe I am able to have an opinion of my own, although this is Scoobynet I was looking at these just the other day, a quick look on autotrader and it would be the lowest price by £1000.

Bargain, maybe, maybe not..

image doctor,

I wasn't meaning to offend you! You quite evidently had an opinion, I wasn't trying to suggest that there was anything wrong with it, I simply wished to ask you to elaborate on your idea of what these things go for.

I can vouch for this car.

the owner is one of the most honest people I have met, I think it is more a case that he wants to sell it rather than there is an issue with it that would cause him to drop the price.

Basically it is a second car for him, and the money would be much better spent elsewhere.

I could always tell him to up the price if you all think it is worth doing, but for a quick sale is it not fair?

re: cam chain change

I was looking for one of these a while back and was also advised about a cam chain change
apparently has to be done at 100K miles or else = problems later
lowest cost I could get was through a friend's company at £1200 !
parts alone = £800

however these are fantastic drivers cars so could / would be worth the expense if the work hasn't already been done
good luck in selling it !

How odd. I have been told that parts and labour to change an s14 camchain would be circa 5 to 600 all in. I have seen one of these chains on an open engine, and I can well believe that it would last the life of the engine. This helps explain the lack of a camchain change interval in the BMW service schedule for engines equiped with this timing chain system, including the E36 316. Obviously, if the tensioner system were to fail completely, the chain would then be running too loose and so problems are likely.

Again, I have been told that the chain is designed to last the life of the engine and that the tensioner should be replaced if it starts getting noisy.

Pre-GM Saabs used a cam chain IIRC, and I've never heard of any problems with them. In fact there's a chain drive to the gearbox on a Saab, too (which is why they make that odd whining noise)

M3 specialists and other BMW dealers love that "Timing Chain Trick" they make a fortune out of it.. £600 -700 is about right |SHOULD IT EVER NEED TO DONE.....
