I believe the have a higher redline

They should have a STi number on the engine bay, i think the have a red top engine.

I am but a mere amateur and know very little!

i thought that the red tops were only limited editions of the sti i may be completly wrong on that though.

ive had a quick look and so far can see that the sti has 73 more bhp some more torque (80) than the wrx

The sti at most only has 20bhp more than a late wrx, early sti's and wrx's only ran 240bhp, then went upto 260bhp then finally my97+ 280 bhp, I think that the sti's then had around 300.
The major diff is with all the bits that sti stuck on the orig wrx when off assembly, And those bits did make a diff to the overall car.

Standard uk scoobs only had 208-215 in classic form.

So nick200 - is mine an sti? because as far as we are aware its an sti but it could be that the v5 and everyting else wrong, if they are wrong is there any way that i could sue the garage who imported it and sold it as an sti?

No, I don't think it is, it difficult to tell from pictures alone.

Anyway, for starters is deffinitely not a v5 car. v5's were on 98/99 plates. They have a different bumper, spoiler, bonnetvent, grill, interior (and many other things, but i'll not go into them)

My guess is that this is a WRX, not an STI....

....anyway, its still a very clean car, and a very good price, sti or no sti. Both very good cars and much quicker than their UK counterpart.

Good luck with the sale

Nick,

Classic STi's never had 300bhp. They were always released as 280, except the early ones. WRX's were 260 bhp for the newer models, and 240bhp for the early ones.

It has got the WRX STi badge on the back, but I thought that style was only on the later cars, so probably added on after. Also has no STi badges by the doors.

Check www.sidc.co.uk for model info.

On an N plate, it should have red inlet manifold, and STi fog covers.

On first impressions looking at the pics I'd definately say it's a WRX. I've had a 96 STI V2 for four years and know that a genuine STI would have the fog covers (no lamps), gold 16inch 5 spoke Speedline alloys (standard only on the V2), the light/dark grey STI interior (with STI stiched on the front seats in red), manually operated waterspray, Red top manifold... And those are just the easy things to tell by. The engine number or VIN would be the ultimate tell tale sign as others have already pointed out.
Best of luck.

Edited to say that a 95/96 STI would be 260bhp and a WRX would be around the 240bhp mark.

Shouldn't it also have the larger STi exhaust as well, with STi stamped on the backbox? My 1994 one has anyway. I also thought the earlier STis like mine were 250 bhp standard.

Why on the site the one where it lists all the model numbers for you to check against spec, does it show that after 97 it lists them as 300bhp?

http://www.iwoc.co.uk/jpimp4.html

Check the number on here.

There is / was a Japanese manufacturers gentlemans agreement which forbids claiming power outputs over 280. Not sure where the spec C stands on this, as its 320bhp.

Mine has been dyno'd standard at 280bhp

Edited to add, ive just looked at that site and the power is quited in PS, not bhp. It states mine as 300 PS. It also adds the bit about the Jap agreement.

260bhp or 270bhp doesn't make to much difference at the end of the day.... Go on... someone will say it does!

I read somewhere not so long ago that ALL Imprezas have 320bhp anyway!

Nope, its the torque that counts in the real world

Anyone buying this then?

hmm - sounds like its a wrx then rather than an sti - ah well never mind - as the log book states its an sti i really should get that changed, still if anyones seriously interested you are more than welcome to view and test drive the car. its still a very nice motor. bit of a bummer seeing as my other half has been paying insurance for an sti rather then the wrx!
