scoops to replace bonnet grilles anyone?
#1
A nice chap called Stuart replied to a thread of mine and offered pics of a scoob where the standard bonnet vents were replaced with mini scoops. Great for cooling on track days etc.
people's reactions have ranged from to . Love em or hate em, I quite like them but due to limited demand they're about £200!!!
If anyone is interested in clubbing together to get some, let me know and I'll tell Stuart (he didn't want to post this himself as that's a bit like advertising). If enough people reply, maybe we can get them at a sensible price.
If you want a look try

22B replica ones are the same price though, and they probably would supply better cooling to the turbo. Isn't painting a bitch, so damn expensive, £900 for mirrors and door handles....!

Scoops for your bonnet to let air into you air inductor?? Have a look at this cast alloy one, available from MRT and ScoobyMania:
Cost about £60-70 to buy it, get it shipped to the UK, pay the VAT and duty!
Hope this helps

I like the 22b replica ones too, but I've got the old shape bonnet like barge has (above) and the cutouts are a different shape. I don't think anyone does 22b style ones for that bonnet.
£900 for mirrors and door handles?
who quoted you that? Michaelangelo?
I got quoted £200 for sills, mirrors and handles. In the end just went for the sills (£75) as mine is white and I didn't want to look too "hairdresser". He was cheap but it was a top job.
barge, well that's 2 of us m8, it's a first step.

Rich,
Mines white with the fish gill jobs, revolution are in the process of making the 22B replicas for pre 97 beasts. Shouldn't be too much longer.
£200 for painting! I might do some shopping around, the quote I got was from a Subaru recommended place. They wanted to steal my pride and joy for 5 days to do it!!! P*** off! How long did yours take?
Mark.
Just realised, are they 200 per pair?

Hi Mark,
Yes they are £200 per pair but Stuart reckons they'll be a lot cheaper if we get enough people interested.
The chap I used for painting was a little back street place, with one guy on his own.
The big places charge a mint due to their bigger overheads, but there's no way the quality of the work is proportionally as good as the price. I dropped my car off one morning early and picked it up same time next day. He'd even washed it all for me so I could see the job properly. As I said I only had the sills done in the end (and those little pieces on the back bumper). £75.
I've seen a white one with mirrors and handles in white and it looked a bit too much for my liking. A little black breaks it up a bit.
If I were u, I'd shop around some of the smaller places to get comparative quotes. You take a bigger risk I suppose with a smaller place, but I was lucky enough to see this guy's handywork before I went. Someone stuffed the back of my mate's white Vectra V6. He fixed it and you just couldn't tell.
Cheers

Andrew,
I don't have any under bonnet shots, as these are from the MRT website!
I ordered one from Oz along with some other toys, and it worked out at just over £60.
I've yet to put it on the car, as I don't like the idea of rain getting onto the air inductor!!
It completely replaces the grill, and the scoop sits on top, then theres a piece of metal, which sandwichs the bonnet between the scoop and the plate. Bolts are supplied which holds the whole lot together.
Build quality is good, but I'm tempted to sell mine at the moment!

Chaps,
The original price was £200 a pair, but this was on a very low number run. (ie only 1 pair for the old shape bonnet, and 4 pairs (plus a couple of single ones for Stef and his mate) for the new shape have ever been made, and 2 pairs are in the States)
Scoobymania sell the MRT one for about £109 as a comparison. It is made of Alloy and personally I don't like the lines of it. Far to "square" looking.
I made mine because:
1. MRT only do the drivers side and I wanted to balance the bonnet with a pair.
2. MRT only do a scoop for the later bonnet and I've got the early one.
The new supplier I have sploken to will make the scoops in fibreglass for £120 a pair (or £60 each), or in Carbon Fibre (no painting required!) for £200 a pair (or £100 each). If I get enough interest (ie orders with deposit cheques) I will fork out to get the moulds made. I am not doing this for commercial purposes, so you need to persuade me to do this!!!!!

Andy,
I've driven with mine on the car constantly since fitting them and never had any problems with water, and I've driven through some terrible weather, so you should be ok

What color do they come in by default? just wondering as if it's black then I could just pop them onto the blackbeast without painting them , or do they really need painting
Got any pics of the carbon ones? would be interested to see what they look like on a black car.
Though I think I'd go for the fibre ones to be honest.
Stuart:
Do you have standard airbox? reason I ask is that i've got HKS green mushroom induction kit, and like Andy, just wondering if water would cause a problem.
Must say that the fit of them on your car makes them look like they are part of the bonnet, are they really just fitted using the standard blanking plate screws? you not sealed them on or anything?
To be honest, if it's only 100 quid for the fibregalss pair i guess I could splash out. as long as no-one tells suzyQ (yes barge, that is aimed at you )

Oh That's just great I like the idea of extra cooling for the turbo, but then I will have 2 more scoops to worry about getting nicked!!! do they come with theft sensors or something??

I've had mine for a while now, and if it rains I simply replace the backing plate under the bonnet.
Having said that, I've lost it so have been driving it in the rain for the last couple of weeks with no plate.
Doesn't seem to have affected the car of the filter though.
Much better looking that the MRT one IMHO, especially now I've had my brake ducts colour coded too. I should call my car a 'Scoopy Doo'.
I'll get a picci and post it for ya'll to see.
Stef.

Stef,
saw the ducts, or should I say duct on CK in the pics in latest issue of True Grip. Did wonder if they were the same ones as Stuart. Did also notice thr nice orange brake ducts. However, in one shot you had the brake ducts on, and in another you did not. Did you add/remove them during the trackday?
sorry about off-topicness. won't do it again.

To throw the cat amongst the pidgeons
I have the Scoobymania one, looks wicked colour coded. I prefer it, cos I think it follows the lines of the bonnet better
Ill see if I can get some photos posted tonight.

Stuart,
I would be interested in a centre Scoop in carbon as well, could you find out if they would do it, how much it would be?
Thanks Ian

I'll ask the guy on Monday what price turbo scoops would be. I know another chap off this board (Nigel Bowles if he is out there) was inquiring about getting complete bonnets with the turbo scoops in one piece (still with the holes for vents/scoops though).
