I don't know how much they are worth, I have a 2503 which I use for NAT and ISDN dial-up but I got it for nothing. How much are you looking for?

Unfortunately due to discovering I need two new front disks I'm going to have to put that on hold I think!

Sorry,
Steve.

Could I use it too route my cable modem. It would need two Ethernet ports though. If so may be interested.

Do cable modems route over TCP/IP? And why would you need two ethernet ports? If you need any more than one you need a hub.

Because NTL cable modem service only gives you one RIPE-registered IP address, so if you have a router with two Ethernet ports you can run NAT and then to a hub with a LAN on it. Also, you can put some access lists on the router (shouldn't need much if you've got NAT, just a bit of anti-spoofing).

I was thinking of buying a SoHo firewall for the same thing, something like the Watchguard Firebox can be picked up for around 400 quid. I think the throughput's only 11 Mbit/s, but that's more than sufficient for a cable modem.

scoobs -- I checked the spec of the 1720 router on

Yes, I also have a 3640 and a 4500-M, four 2500s and a Cat 5509. None of the 2500s have two Ethernet ports, and the others are all a bit noisy for ordinary use.

steven

I do run winroute on my pc at the moment, but it can cause problems with online gaming and network gaming. Just nice to have a box you don't have to worry about sitting there routing for ya.

John Stevenson -- this may well be true, but none of the 2500s I have is a 2514 (IIRC it's two 2501s, a 2503 and a 2521).

stevencotton -- if you have multiple PCs in multiple rooms (i.e. a home network), it's nice to have a small router that's powered up all the time rather than a big (noisy) PC. Not only that, but Windoze PCs' require a fair bit of rebooting...

Err - seeing as we have some Cisco specialists on here

Have a Cisco 760 acting as my router between my home network and my ISP - anything I should be aware of, security wise etc? Also running Zone Alarm with it.

I re-read you post carl, I now see you meant none of your 2500s have two Ethernet, I thought on first read you meant no 2500s have two E/net. I had a 2500 in the house for a while....right noisy wee bugger, vey high pitched fan..... If anyone wants a 2514 however I might be able to help.

Puff 760 doesn't run pucker Cisco IOS so there is very little it can do for you security wise, really all it does is route packets.

Cisco 760 -- not my speciality. There was a time when I hadn't used anything smaller than a 12012 but I've got some experience of 'lesser' kit now
