Unhappy MY99 WRX STI Type R with B.E Failure for sale...

Hi Folks,

The Type R's up for sale due to a number of reasons, baby arrival and the need to free up funds being the main one's.

It has recently suffered from the immenent usual big end failure which did not help in my plan to sell but here goes:

BASICS:
- Cool Metallic Grey
- 2 door coupe
- Genuine 32k miles
- 1 prev owner

It was brought into the country privately by the 1 previous owner to myself who personally purchased it from Cyprus and handled all the importing process himself after seeking the relavent advice on doing this. This makes it one of the few examples that has not been brought into the country via the various traders and specialists. The car was bought from a Subaru Dealership and was actually the last ver5 they had in stock!.

This whole process is fully documented in the paperwork that I recieved from the prev owner and which is what assured me of the origionality of the car, although I had it HPI and is clear. IMHO it is just like going and buying the car yourself, I have the origional deposit/purchase invoices, shipping documents/VAT Payment docs/SVA docs and much more.

- bill of laden doc
- cargo release doc
- customs clearance docs
- origional Subaru invoice from supplying dealer
- origional deposit reciepts from prev owner
- origional SVA doc
- HPI check docs
- origional service history book
- origional manual in english.
- distress flare still intact.
- previous road tax discs
-previous MOT's
- Optimax and octane booster reciepts

SNAG POINTS:
Although the car is in generally excellent condition, there are a few points to note:

- The odd parking pin dent which are barly visible
- the odd surface scratch on laquer
- usual stone chips on front end
- Wheels kerbed and could benifit from a re-furb.

It will be going to Rally Colin of Thames vally motorsport in the next few days to sort the big end failure out and will be recieving the relavent new parts (crank/bearings etc). They are one of the best in the business as many of you may know and should do an excellent job. There are the following options:

Option 1
The car needs to go, so i am open to reasonable offers of around £8.5 for it to be taken away in it's current state should anyone want to have the big end repair done themselves. This seems fair as i've tryed to base it on the fact that the average repair cost is around £2.5k.

Option 2
This for me to have it done by TVM and Colin and it will then be for sale for offeres around £10.5K. As most of you know, the big end failure was only a matter of time so is not a major issue. prior to this, the car has been cared for inh every way with the usual Optimax and booster/ regular oil changes etc / warming and cooling etc.

Option 3

I can replace the standard 16" gold wheels and remove the private number plate to reduce the price further if anyone wants. sensible offers please.

I will be very, very sad to see this car go as it has given me imense driving plesure and is amazing as any other Type R owner will vouch for but it has to go asap.

Why is it only a matter of time? 32K miles is nothing on an STi5 engine. Do you know why the big ends failed?

Best of luck with the sale.

Big end failure is nothing to do with fueling/detonation problems, but down to oil starvation (generally)

Kenny, sorry, that is not true. Big ends can indeed fail if there are problems with the fueling or knock. Severe knock can cause the oil film to be pushed out from between thr rod bearing and crank resulting in the bearing picking up and then failure of the big end.

Kenny, why is it that so many Jap imported cars that were OE mapped for high octane fuel spun their bearings when they came to the UK? Is it because their oil pumps stopped working on the way over or perhaps the oil pressure relief valves stuck on the boat too? IIRC there have been big end failures attributed to these reasons but it was still speculation. The most commen conclusion that I have read on here, was a combination of lower rated fuel and an uncalibrated ECU to cope with it, which caused det that in turn seized pistons or put undue pressure on the shells. Poor oil change procedure was a common theme for the UK cars, which went bang.
