Default Impreza Turbo 2000 UK-MY98. 63k miles - £5900

- £5900
- 63,000 miles
- Silver 4-door saloon
- Prodrive Styling Pack
- Full Subaru Service History
- PIAA Lamps
- Brembo front brakes (from Godspeed)
- Air-Con
- Detangoed at the front (ie, no orange plastic/lights)
- De-Cat down-pipe (plus original in the boot if you want it)
- CAT-1 Alarm and Immobiliser
- Nice JVC radio/CD and MP3 player
- Tax’ed until March 2007
- Richard Burns memorial sticker on the boot (but can be removed!)
- Scooby Doo toy on the back shelf

The Prodrive styling pack was an add-on when first purchased and consists of mid-level spoiler (later to be standard on MY99s), 17” Speedline/Prodrive alloys, uprated and lowered suspension and colour coded skirting all round as per the STIs of that era.

The PIAA lamps were also added at that time and using them at night (if you remember to take the covers off) makes it look like daytime again.

I have owned this car since 2nd Apr, 2005 when I changed jobs and could get my own car (rather than using a company car). At that time it had only 32,000 miles on the clock and had been serviced by Wilsons in Essex. I have since proceeded to put another 31,000 miles on the clock driving up and down the M1 between Aylesbury and Halifax on business. During this time Adams in Aylesbury has serviced it. Here are the dates, mileage and services performed.

13/4/05 – 33136 miles – 90k service (inc cambelt).
1/7/05 – 39372 miles – 97.5k service
28/10/05 – 47989 – 105k service
6/2/2006 – 55211 – 112.5k service
19/5/2006 – 62372 – 120k service

The car has a de-cat down-pipe and Green air filter fitted as the only engine modifications. It still passes the MOT emissions tests – I can prove it. And the original down-pipe is included (if you want it). A ScoobySport back box is also fitted.I fitted the Brembo brakes when I first got the car following a Group Buy on ScoobyNet. They’re a great upgrade to the standard 2-pot brakes on the MY98.

What is right and what is wrong with the car?

I’ve been on ScoobyNet since 1999 when I owned my first Impreza. It’s a great community and I think being able to sell your car to like-minded enthusiasts new and old is a great idea. For that I’m going to list everything right or wrong about the car no matter how small.

Firstly, the car has never had a problem and has been 100% reliable. Going back through the service notes does not show anything untoward being done to the car. Certainly, since I’ve had the car the only repair work outside of the service schedule has been to replace the water pump that was starting to leak and replace the air-con condenser that was also leaking.

The car - since I’ve had it at least - has always been run on Super unleaded (Shell and Tesco 99RON). The car was rolling-roaded at Power Engineering in February 2006 and produced 245bhp and 237 lbs/ft torque. Which for an almost standard car of this age is great. Although I check the oil regularly I’ve never once had to top it up between services. More than that the oil level just doesn’t move.

When the car is started from cold you can hear some slight piston slap. It goes within 5 minutes when the car has started to warm up. I got this checked out as soon as I heard this and Adams said not to worry about it as it was very slight and wouldn’t be a problem. I’ve since learnt that this is a common “feature” of the 98 models and aside from sounding odd is not a problem if it goes away quickly.

There are three bodywork problems (all minor)
1) The front left corner of the skirting has a slight scuff where I scraped a high kerb when parking. It’s so small I’ve just not done anything about it.
2) There was a slight dent on the rear right door when someone opened their door on me. This was pulled out earlier this year. But if you look very closely at the right angle you can still see a slight impression.
3) The front right wing has partially been re-sprayed where it meets the headlight. I didn’t notice this when I bought the car. The only time I did notice this was when I polished the car. It really is nothing that stands out – but if you look very closely you can see a subtle change in shades of silver.

Other than that, there is no rust anywhere on the bodywork. I polish it regularly and generally keep it looking good.

Mechanically the following will need to be looked at in the future. This info is from Adams during the last service. None of this is urgent.

- Near side front strut has some slight play
- Front brake disks will need replacing

Adams told me they would look at this at the next service. So given I’ve only just had the car serviced that’s 7,500 miles before these things need to be looked at.

As a blast from the past – here is the thread of pictures I put up soon after getting the car a year ago.

Default What's polish?

Only kidding. The car has been washed twice already, but polishing is for Sundays.
