Unhappy 99-T IMPREZA WRX STi V5 TYPE-R Black (Will Need Attn)

Right then its back up for sale - basically when the car is left for a few days, on cold start up the big ends are a bit noisey on it - Once its warm (after 10 mins or so) the car sounds perfect and drives spot on - goes throughout the rev range with no hesitation

I wasn't 100% sure it was the big ends after showing it to a mate - however by the time i get the car to a local garage to look at it is warm and doesn't make the noise....so they are non the wiser but after searching the forum it is more than likely the big ends on there way out...

I am truly gutted as I searched a long time to find a Type-R and have only done 500 miles or so in the car since buying it.... My loss is your gain - I dont have the time/money to get it sorted so am selling it as it is. Some People would sell the car as it is to an unwary buyer by selling/showing the car when it is warmed up and you would be none the wiser (like me when i bought it) However i'm not like that and am being 100% upfront with the fault - ANYONE IS MORE THAN WELCOME TO VIEW/INSPECT IT.....

Anyway it is there (the sound when cold) and will need seeing to in the near future or whenever it lets go.... therefore priced at £6850 ono

You could easily go out and buy a V5 Type-R for 9/10k and have the engine let go - Atleast with mine I have given the allowance for the engine in the price so when it does eventually let go and is repaired the car won't cost over the odds.

Details of the car:
99-T reg Version 5 STi Type-R 2 door in Mica Black
Covered 58,000 miles with a full UK/Jap Service History - Engine Rebuilt By ScoobyClinic under 5000-miles ago by Previous Owners to me.

6 Months MOT - No Tax - Car IS Hpi Clear

All Standard: E/W, E/M, PAS, Adjustable DiffLock, I/C WaterSpray..Also Blitz NUR Spec Exhaust, STi6 Lip, Cat-1 Alarm, Tracker...

In Very Good Condition Throughout However Has 2x CarPark Dings and a few Light Scratches here and there - Polishes up a treat

Cheers
Raf
P.S Car is in Bradford Junc 26/M62 - PM If Interested

You sure the noise isnt piston slap? that can sound slightly of big ends but goes away when warm.

defo not piston slap as i had a MY98UK 2000 with it and the sound of my impreza is completley different - sounds like a propellor (sp?) sort of sound and gets louder as you rev it and when you release the throttle you can hear it clearer -

may give SC a call tomorrow to see if they can help

not rang yet - its just they are about 80 odd miles from me so if i was to drive down it would be warm and wouldn't make the noise so the only option is to leave it there and then its hassle for me to get back home and then back down to SC to pick it up - tbh i'm just cutting my losses and selling - dont have the time/or wan the hassle of running around..!!!

£6500 WILL BUY IT

Red face ?????

:O

You must be mad or have too much money in the bank!!!

Get that phone call made and save yourself £3K!!! They must surely honour some sort of warranty on that (unless the damage has been self-inflicted, of-course),

Well it defo hasn't been inflicted by myself and i doubt the previous owner would as when he got the rebuild done (have receipt for 2.5k) the car was towed from Bournemouth to SC as he only wanted them to do the rebuild after ringing around. The car has since been serviced twice (in 5k) so as far as i can see it can't have been self-inflicted or anything... its just one of them things i suppose...

Worse thing about it is I specifically looked for a type-R that had the rebuild done so that i wouldn't have to fork out any time soon.... the plan was to get it booked for a re-map/up grade fuel/oil pump, panel filter and enjoy - but that's not gonna happen now unfortunately....!

If you do not explore all the option first you are mad, it may be something very simple to put right and it may be they will do it free or at worse at a resonable cost, even so you will know what the problem is and then you can make an informed decision.

Does it make the sound under load?

Put the handbrake on and (carefully) try to pull off, obviously without actually doing so. When its revving in that situation is the noise lots louder?

Thanks for the advice guys - i'll give them a call tomorrow.
Stu - appreciate it mate..will let you know how i get on.
Trem - no it doesnt make it under load - when the car is started from cold and rev'd upto 3krpm you can hear it - also when the rev is dropped you can hear it - as soon as the car is warm it sounds perfect....

I would lean towards piston slap in all honesty me old china.

Surely if the big end was gone/going it would be very noticeable under load.

its a lovely car and mechanics can be wrong, especially if they can make a few quid.

Defo sounds like piston slap to me, especially as it's more noticable when you release the throttle...... mind you, it's still an engine out job to fix..... well, can be done in the car if you're desperate..... or mad......

Or, if it is diagnosed as the slap, then there's no harm in letting it warm up thoroughly before enjoying it.....!!

IMO, a big end knock does sound like a 'Propellor' (sp?) turning and Piston Slap sounds more like a 'ticking' or 'tappety' noise.

However, this isn't the place to discuss it, I pointed Scoobyclinic in the direction of this thread so they may/may not wish to discuss this with the owner, however, I very much doubt they'll want to discuss it on an open forum.

Whatever happens, best of luck with the sale and I should be in touch with you RAF1, providing my car sells quickly (deposit taken).

Cheers,
Grant

I did this also Grant when the seller advertised the car on his first thread

I also recommended the seller contact SC regards warranty under 5k miles, but he seems to prefer talking a few thousand pounds loss than chase up SC.

As everyone says above, piston slap. Was the car rebuilt with forged pistons? If so then most likely its piston slap.

I have the same with my car and Forged Wiseco pistons. on cold noise is f*cking annoying but then goes once warm.

If you still sell, someone could get a bl**dy bargain here!

Hi Guys,

RAF1 it is very possible that you are seriously under selling your car here. Before you make any knee jerk selling decisions we strongly advise you to bring the car to us for a free of charge check over, as has already been said the noise you are hearing could simply be down to the pistons used in the build, the majority of our customers go for uprated pistons which can be very noisy when the car is first started and this can easily be mistaken for a fault.

The reason we say this is if it were big ends they would be noisey both hot and cold get louder once the car has got hotter as the oil becomes thinner.
Normally big end rattle is most evident around 2500 revs as the throttle is blipped.

We always advise our customers who do have race pistons to refrain from any reving or blipping of the throttle until the engine has started to warm up, the reason for this is on a race piston we have to run large clearances as these pistons expand alot more than standard one's as they warm up hence the vehicle quietening down when it comes up to temp.

So please get it down to us before you undersell your pride and joy.

Cheers

great lets hope it's something out of nothing & all is actually ok.

Also I think I would like to give a big to Scoobyclinic for actually coming into the thread after people mentioning it to them and actually being proactive offering advice and then helping RAF1 out, it's a rare occurance these days so well done.
