i phoned sky some time ago about sky plus as i was given a box for free from a friend that does the installs.

Anyway... sky refused to activate the subscription on it as it wasn't installed by one of there engineers and i didn't buy the box from them directly.

Has something changed?

I didn't buy my box from sky (got a brand new one from simplydigital for £135) and I installed it myself & sky activated mine no problem.

Might be helpful if you put the make & model numbers up hectic - there seem to be some models that are more reliable that others apparently.
