Its def an STI. Not been replaced as far as i can see.

Perhaps the newage sti suspension is red? This is off a classic. Any model numbers i can check/post to prove either way? Will have a look on them tonight.

thats worrying. Will check it out tonight.

Anyone got a picture of classic STI struts to compare? Cant understand any reason an STI would have its suspension changed for WRX stuff! The 1 previous owner lavished money on it, so i cant imagine it was a cost cutting exercise.

Are you guys 100% sure??

I think that early STI's were modified WRX's with slightly more power and other small differences and therefore had the WRX suspension, the later classic STI's (full facelift 98 onwards) were purpose built STI's and had the pink struts from what I can recall.

Hope this helps

Is there any definitive documentation showing this and when?

What numbers should i be looking for on the struts and where are they? Didnt get time to look last night.

Could it be the shocks were changed for a UK part number?

Have a read of this, it might help a bit:-

Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Knowledge / Specifications

This was taken from there, so looks like the suspension changed on the 1998 STI v5

"1998. 9 : Impreza WRX & Impreza WRX STi 5 [Type-F]

The WRX got the improved PHASE 2 engine with brand new intake manifold and cam shaft to realize improved the low-end and mid-range response. And it adopted inverted strut suspension, Sports ABS(STi), and WRcar type rear spoiler"

V5 (STI-RA??) is the first model with the red STI struts, the V1-4 STIs' came with uprated wrx struts and springs which looked essentially standard. The red struts are inverted similar to the bilstein shockers.

Would they make any difference to the pink struts. Only reason I asked is that I have a Version 6 STi and im swapping my coilovers for my brothers STi version 4 shocks with lowering springs!!!!
