I think what the rule of thumb is that your turbo should be no bigger than you aim to go power wise, as fitting a turbo that's to big is just going to lag. The vf43 is suitable if your going to aim at around 350bhp+, i run this turbo with de cat-k&n air filter-255 walbro,
and Andy forrest mapped, this returned 350bhp+. hope this helps as im no expert.

The IHI VF43 has almost identical features of the VF39 with a thrust bearing and a P18 exhaust housing, but the wastegate opening is larger to relieve boost creep issues. Expect to achieve full boost with the proper mods and a quality tune between 3000-3500rpms.
Later type turbo also means that there are less issues....although there are not many heard of on the 34's 35's....if i was opting between the 35 or 34 i would get the 34 it will flow more and will give you a better power curve to the top. IMO

But correction and see here...it might help>>>
VF43 is the same as the VF39 except it is a improved turbo which is not prone to the cracking the VF39 was...

The VF34 is a very good turbo, found on cars like the S202 and early spec c's (pre twin scroll cars) its a roller bearing turbo so it spools up quickly and is low friction compared to the VF35 for instance which is a sleeve bearing turbo.
Definately worth getting as these are like rocking horse poo

Your spot on Baly, im in workshop now and have spent the last 15minutes trying to spot the difference between the vf34 from rally car and the vf43 from road car as i have them side by side on the bench, as you say the hot side seems identical.
