We have a jig that can convert them to conventional speedo, or of course you can drive speedo less, or get one of those after market satnav type speedos.
But yes, it will fit in place of any 5 speed Subaru tranmission. Front stub shafts are required, plus a short prop for a GC8.

£150.00 + VAT The jig cost me nearly £500 to make, as the hole for the speedo drive is 3 different diameters and is at an angle to the diff centre line. Get it wrong and the speedo drive and driven gears do not mesh up.
Just take the front case off and send it here and it'll get done in a day or so. No need for the whole box to come unless you aren't sure of taking boxes apart.
It isn't difficult or complicated, just needs care after a quick chat with Rob our transmission engineer here.

So what David says;
- The 6speed works with no problems at all on my impreza
- The Speedo will be correct on my impreza
- What are the toatal costs with you dave? Converting and mounting to my impreza?
Is this gearbox rated for higher powers aswel? Currently running 230 but want more in the future!

Once converted the speedo works. Whether there are NO PROBLEMS is a tricky one - I cannot answer if the synchro is broken or the bearings are noisy.
To fit the box and the rear diff is £500.00 + VAT [ £587.50 inclusive ] 2 side stump shafts, if not supplied with the kit, are £150.00 + VAT. [ £176.25 inc ] I do not see any in the box picture but maybe they are loose.
A short prop to fit a GC8 is £100.00 + VAT [ £117.50 inc ] exchange.
The speedo conversion is £150.00 + VAT for the machining and 2 hours labour to remove and refit the front casing £96.00 + VAT [ £112.80 inc ]
So probably;
£500.00 labour
£150.00 stumps
£100.00 prop shaft
£150.00 Machining
£ 96.00 Speedo conversion labour
£ 40.00 Diff & gearbox oil
All Plus VAT at 17.5%.

David thanks for the info, I have been assured that the box has no syncro or bearing issues, the car had one 60 year old owner from new so I would expect that it has had an easy life, the box comes complete with the stump shafts, drive shafts, propshaft etc.

David, more questions :-) What is the length of the propshaft to enable fitting of a 6 speed to a classic impreza? I have 10 props of which there are 4 different lengths. I appretiate the flange on the propshaft needs to match that on the rear diff. Also are the classic auto prop and newage 6 speed prop the same length. Thanks in advance Damien
Most probably going to send the casing to you for machining next week.

I am going to arrange to have the box machined, repair the one damaged drive shaft then get the correct length prop sorted. I have a uk sti 6 speed prop here just need to identify which is which. Think once that's all done i should get better money on eBay.

The auto prop from a GC8 fits a 6 speed conversion on to a GC8. But the same prop is wrong on a GD series car as the centre support is off centre and you end up with a prop shaft with a dog leg half way down.
There are two flange sizes, or rather bolt hole pcd sizes on the flanges and we simply move the flanges around to a clean area and re-drill in the alternative place. Do it in place is the easiest way, as getting those flanges off is a real fight - the nut is extremely tight.
We send props away to be shortened, but I know not by how much, as the machine shop has the info.
