Default mot question

hi all. my 93wrx is currently sorn with no tax or mot.

next week I will insure it and drive it to a pre arranged mot test.

during the test the tester will need to take the car out on the road for a brake test with no tax (rollers) I assume this is legal?

Also, if it fails im allowed to drive it home with no tax/mot right? I don't want to be ripped off for repairs.

cheers

Are you hoping it passes or are you confident? I would check over my vehicle before I booked an mot.

You can drive straight home if it fails

Yeah you can drive it to the MOT and back again if it fails, as long as it has Insurance and as long as you only go to and from the MOT, so no detours lol
Make sure you can prove it's booked in for a MOT

You do realise a lot of 2 wheel rollers have a 4wd mode. So its not just a blanket no no.

Certain roller setups have a mode which allows one wheel to rotate freely while testing the other on the same axle.

Reason i know is that all northern ireland mots are done at government mot centres(28 of them) and none have an actual 4 wheel brake tester they have 2 wheel brake testers that have 4wd mode. Otherwise every awd car in n.ireland would be fooked. All my imprezas over past 6yrs have been done this way with no issue and if there was you can bet there would be up roar as everyone enjoys ranting/claiming of government!

also, on wheeler dealers Ed china does a brake test on something 4wd cant rem what episode and you see the brake tester is in 4wd mode!

So how will that work then as rear wheels need to turn as it stresses the centre diff, would refuse point blank to let my car be tested in such way.

Most 4wd roller brake testers will turn one wheel forward and the opposite side backwards in order to not damage the car.

Still damages the centre diff, the rears need to turn, either on rollers or in free air, thats all mot places have a meter that they take out in the car(cant remember proper name) but most are too lazy to take the car out, mine gets road brake tested as it wont go anywhere near anything but a 4 wheel roller.

see i was always under the opinion/understanding that if one wheel is turning one way, and the other the reverse, then the propshaft will not turn

my opinion comes from building/playing/racing tamiya 4wd rc cars as a kid lol

That's correct and will work fine as long as you don't have a limited slip rear diff fitted... if this is the case then if you try and turn one rear wheel forwards and the other backwards, it will prevent the center diff spinning but will load the rear diff instead.

Forget the centre diff; One wheel being forcibly span is not ideal for the rear limited slip diff either. It won't break it, but it will put it under unnessercery strain (especially if the tester fafs about), and if its old and worn already then really its not a good idea.

LSDs should not be used on brake test rollers. Regardless of it being four wheel drive. Imprezas have a LSD on the rear (some have front LSDs too).

The VSi information provided by the MOT system should tell the tester, but it also contains incorrect or inaccurate information...the method of brake test required included. Its also meant for "standard" cars. So if you want to argue just say it has a modified locking diff fitted (a detroit locker on a modded Land Rover will happily jump it off the rollers as it has zero slip )

So Tapley metre all the way.

As for road tax...Tester should use trade plates.

edit: Just to add ED China NOT a qualified vehicle mechanic (even if he has a engineer degree)...Building a motorised sofa and using rattle cans to spray paint a car does not make him an expert, nor correct, that includes the products he endorses and the content within shows he is featured in.
