Just looked at 95 wrx to buy but "check engine" light is on
Hi guys
Firstly, I'm located in the Cayman Islands so this is the ONLY impreza for sale and likely to be for sale for the foreseeable future.
Just been to see it, 1995 WRX Wagon (jap import). Everything seems in good order, but the gearbox is very loose, and the check engine light is on - seller (who is a good friend) says that the check engine light has been on for about a year, thinks it is a sensor or something.
I've checked for ticking on startup and white smoke, but no issues in this regard.
Any advice? Should I buy?

You can possibly find out why the cel light is on by following
the instructions on JGM's website

Hello mate and welcome to SN.
Regardless of how much work (if any) is required:
* How are you going to source parts ?
* Is it going to be cost-effective ?
* How are you going to find someone to do any work ?
I presume that your friend would have the answers but they might not be practical for you.
However, you'll always find someone helpful here and lots of people bang the drum for good traders, members etc. (as has already happened) so good luck.

Thanks for the replies.
No subaru dealership here I'm afraid, you take your car to "a guy down the road" when it goes wrong. not ideal, but its the way it is over here.
I'll check those instructions for checking fault codes, thank you.
Parts can be sourced from Japan, its not a major issue. Cost effective - who knows! I'm not expecting it to be the best car i've ever driven, but as I currently drive a land cruiser auto, so looking to have some fun!
Is the loose gearbox a big worry for a car of this age?

Loose fitting in the chassis?
Either could be just bushes or very expensive.

Loose gearbox is common. It'll be the bushes worn out and probably the spring has had it. They can all be replaced for about £60 from import car parts.
Has the car got a de - cat exhaust by any chance ??
Have you driven it ??

depending on the fault code, it could be the lambda sensor which means the engine will run rich. Not ideal for fuel economy but certainly better than running lean !!!
I would get your mate to make sure that it is all sorted first or negotiate because of the issues

Yes it does have a de-cat - does that have something to do with it?? Seems to drive fine apart from the gearbox. Clutch biting point is a bit high but i'd expect that from a car of this age.
Going to check the fault code and see what's what!
cheers all
