Default WRX S

Currently considering a Scooby as my next car, 2008-2010 model.

Would love the STi version but seems to be way over my budget (10k tops, cash).

I've noticed there's the S model too which seems to be in between the STi and WRX version.

S model comes with 250 bhp as standard which I think I would be dissapointed with as I've had a 300 bhp car for the last few years. Can the power be upped on the S model and if so what's involved to do so and at what cost? Would just a map do the job?

Decat exhaust system, good panel filter then a remap should see you up around 280 but then the turbo and the new wrx crappy intercooler is getting to its limits!

The hatch STi's do seem to be holding their value well, this was around the cheapest I could find.

If you're used to 300+ a 250BHP WRX isn't really going to cut it.

WRX-S is a good car and is not far off the performance of a stock STI hatch however i would suggest it is not the ideal platform if you are looking at tuning to 300bhp+. I have a 2010 model and it does me just fine as a daily drive and i'm happy with its out of the box performance - its supprisingly torquey! I have changed the exhaust for a stainless catback, fitted better discs and pads, airfilters etc which have probably made little or no difference to its performance but again it all depends on what your happy with. As for buying one of the older blob wide tracks for £10K+....not a band wagon i'll be jumping on no matter how good they are!

Think I will leave it then

Had an Astra VXR for the past few years, running what is classed as stage 3 (turbo back exhaust, fmic and remap) and made 290-305 bhp on varies dynos over the past 2 years. Torque was at 340 to 370 ft/lbs. All it would need is a hybrid turbo (£800) and it would sit at 320 bhp all day long so I think going to a 250 bhp wrx wouldn't keep me happy

Guess if I decide to go with a scooby I will have to save the extra for a STi. The one linked at 10k has 101k miles, so would defiantly be a no no

fit a decent turbo and better top mount a remap andy forrest remap will easily make more than 320bhp and the added bonus its not a bloody astra.
Andy forrest is getting 280BHP out them with just a remap and nothing else

You can see how my money pit is progressing here! Changing the brakes then turbo FMIC and fuel pump should have me at my target of 370bhp ish.
I got the car 1 owner and low mileage for under 7000, if i had 10000 at the time i would of waited for an STI.

Just like straight lines and/or racing in them then?
A 250bhp WRX (duly up-rated suspension and brakes) would take it on, especially with roundabouts and bends in the way.

btw welcome to SN

You would be supprised by the drive in the wrxs I bought my wrx 08 hatch or £7k three months ago and I love it the s would of been a better choice and like you an Sti would be perfect but my budget wouldn't allow. I had a 350bhp impreza type r and this isn't as quick but with the 2.5 you get the lower torque then the turbo comes in honestly it will supprise you I think mines Been mapped though. The Vxr I would assume gets a lot of torque steer but with the wrx it grips from the off. I went to prodrive with South Wales Scooby boys and they were all amazed at the power. Don't let the haters put you off check out the American market they love them. But change the brakes there **** I need to do mine ASAP

Having come from a stage 3 Astra VXR my self. A WRX would be pretty poo id say. Yes they will have better grip in first or second and in the bends. But a lot of people under estimate them(VXR). They are very quick around town. My classic STI which is prob around 340 mark. Only feels slightly quicker. And we all no sometimes getting a 4wd car off the line can be tricky (or is that just me lol)

I've checked AT/eBay and I'm sure 11k can get one with sub 50k miles.
