What's the applied model code that's found on the VIN plate. It begins 'GC8-----

No.
Look on the VIN plate, you'll see it says 'applied model'. It's a 7 digit number.

If it's an import you can search the model codes here

http://www.type-ra.com/impreza-model-code/

You can search by transmission and engine codes too

Engine and transmission codes are far less accurate.

The VIN plate is found on the nearside suspension turret in the engine bay, what you put up was the chassis number.

Thinking about it Dean, transmission and engine numbers on the VIN plates should always be consistent shouldn't they, even though, as we know, Subaru were known to mix and match a bit back in the early days.
