Rant Time
So after having a long crap day, went to the local supermarket to get some milk. Has an underground car park, so yes my exhaust will sound louder then normal, drove in nice and slow and parked up.
Soon as i walk in this stupid cow comes up to me and asks, are you the guy with that white car with a loud exhaust.
My response is polite, yes how can i help you?
I then get a speech on exhaust loudness levels and the law.
My response is polite that my car has recently passed its MOT and there are no issues with its loudness
By now my patience is running thing so I walk away only for her to follow me down all the bloody rows telling me im waking her kids up
I asked her if the kids sleep in the bloody super market as thats where i am right now.
She asked how would you like it if you had a child, I said i did and she loves my car.
IM then accused of being a bad father for buying the car if i have a child, my response now was not sooo polite
Now had a call from home saying cops have been round to speak to me about my car and threatening behaviour
Can they make me change my exhaust , anyone else had any issues
sorry for the long story had to get it off my chest, really felt like placing her in one the bloody freezers

she was too thick to understand just wanted to walk away as she was getting on my nerves
I always drive respectfully in such places, Wasn't attempting the quarter mile record in a flipping car park
Local chavs in their corsas must have wound her up before lol

I had police round a few years ago as someone reported my car for making too much noise and a report it was seen accelerating away from a junction. He was rude about the whole thing, I tried to explain it was one persons subject option, they was not trained by vosa or had anything knowledge of sound levels, but I would make the effort to be as quiet as I could ( report was 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon ). He then tried to produce me with a section 59 without even looking at the car or hearing it. Having spelt my name wrong even with my licence I politely refused it. He responded with "if it's been reported it must be true". I do not condone people being rude to the police as they have a job to do but there are some tools out there.

I was told (after being pulled for no belt) that my exhaust was illegal because it was louder than a standard exhaust system. I then asked him to prove it was louder than stock and asked if he could measure the DB level of my car and compare it to the stock readings of a 1997 STI.
As expected, he had a clueless look on his face and then came out with some crap that it's actually down to officer discretion and not actual DB readings....lol....
He then walked off, wrote a seat belt ticket out and didn't mention my exhaust again.
I have the upmost respect for the police but some of them are just fecking idiots.

not this old bolox again the law is
uk model 89db end of
jdm import with sva test 101db
use section 44 sub parragraph f of the rta 1988 to get off
this clearly states any car not made for use in the eu/uk is not subject to sections 40-42 of the 1988rta but said car must have a sva test and in order to pass sva test must be less than 101db GAME OVER get it tested and proven to be less keep the certificate in the car with you

Imo the police might have acted incorrectly. They should have simply gone to your home asking for you, and NOT mentioning anything else. They aren't supposed to discuss matters involving anyone with the whole world (you didn't murder her did you?).
In fairness they probably don't want to be bothered with such things but if you politely imply that you know they haven't got a leg to stand on ('there were a couple of cars that had larger bore exhausts', 'don't suppose the young lad with his boom-box going full tilt had anything to do with it?', 'it does echo in that underground car park', 'how many more complaints have you had/did she start a petition?' etc. etc.) and if she's been all haughty and lah-di-dah with them they'll just brush it off.
If she was a lone female the police have to at least look into things.
If they do pick on you MS is very well versed in destroying the myth of plod's 'Exhaust Theory' nonsense.

I suppose this depends upon how 'awkward' an owner wishes to be in the event of problems.
Personally I wouldn't go to the expense and inconvenience of a test and then carting documents in the car. There's always the chance that the officer would ask you to prove that the exhaust hadn't been modified since the test (if they're that bloody-minded to nab you in the first place they'd probably try anything on).
I think it's straightforward:
(Personally I'd have put in an application for costs to focus D&C Police and CPS on not wasting police and public time and money).

I think it's straightforward:
- THEY have to prove an offence has occurred;
- they would have to go through the costly effort of proving it;
- they would have to prove that they went about it the right way.

Here's some interesting things about noisy cars from two council websites:
http://www.norfolk.police.uk/safetya...urvehicle.aspx
Exhausts:
http://www.reigate-banstead.gov.uk/e..._car_exhausts/
http://www.norfolk.police.uk/safetya...urvehicle.aspx
Exhausts:
- The vast majority of large or big bore exhausts are illegal for use on public roads. The fact they may have passed an MOT test is irrelevant as this only checks for exhaust gasses and emission legislation compliance.
- Big bore and sports exhaust systems are usually fitted to increase the sound emitted and this contravenes the Type Approval of the vehicle, which is an offence. There is no requirement for police to measure the sound level from the exhaust system, it only requires an opinion that the system is not standard and that it is noisier than a normal vehicle of the same specification.
- It is not an offence to sell these exhaust systems, but it is an offence to fit one to your vehicle and drive it on a public road. Motorists who do so would be reported to court and may face a fine and court costs.
Car exhausts noise nuisance
This section provides information and advice on making a complaint about noise from car exhausts.
It is possible that noise from car exhausts could constitute a statutory nuisance within the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 - but this is unlikely.
The primary legislation aimed at dealing with such noise is the Motor Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.
These regulations lay down maximum permitted noise levels from exhausts and the regulations are enforced by the police and the Vehicle Inspectorate.
Other legal provision which may be applicable are common law nuisance and section 82 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Both of these allow individuals to take their own legal action and may offer a more speedy remedy than we can offer using our powers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Under some circumstances the activity may be controlled by an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) which can be obtained from a court by the Community Safety Department or the Police.
However, it should be noted that ASBOs can only be granted by a court all other appropriate legal channels have been tried by the local authority and have failed.
If your concern relates to exhaust noise from a neighbour's vehicle (rather than an unknown person regularly using the road by your house) we would advise you to speak to your neighbours in the first instance. They may be unaware of the degree of disturbance they are causing
Before you make a formal complaint we strongly recommend you read our guidance notes on making a complaint.
Having read the guidance notes, make your complaint online or make your complaint by letter, telephone or email.
We will need to know exactly where the activity is taking place and when it may be witnessed by our officers. Any other information would be helpful.
We would also advise you to make a complaint to the owner of the property from which the disturbance emanates if it is occupied by a tenant.

worrys me that the law states, 'it only requires an opinion that the system'. does that mean we can start accusing police cars of the same and they have to take them off the road to get them checked?
