Default advice on importing my next impreza

im looking at getting back in a scooby within the next few months and i am considering importing my own but i have a few questions.

getting it to the docks is the easy part, plenty of jap exporters like japan-partner who have good reviews-its the next steps im wanting help with

-do i need an agent at the docks this end to clear the car/pay all duty/assure all paperwork is present and correct? if so how and who do i use and what sort of fee do they charge?

im guessing i cannot just drive the car away as there will be no plates on it-or can i if i insure it and book it for an mot on the day and drive it there from the docks?

any other tips you can give me on who to use etc?

i really dont wanna pay a company to do it for me if its do-able by myself

cheers

hi,
you will get an arrive date. when it arrives you will be charge to storeage until the cars paperwork is check and import tax and then vat is paid then the car will be released. the car has to be loaded away. I can not remember if the storage is a fixed fee but it isn't alot.
normal if your quick it can be cleared in a week
best ring the dock your planning to send to and they will give you fees or the inland revenue i ring if you can not get through to the dock
i used southhampton alot

Circa £2k so it needs to be a cheap car, I wonder how much sense it makes as a financial proposition, obviously there is the benefit of it never having seen our crappy winters.

What you thinking of getting matt?

A nice clean classic from a version 2 ra to a version 6 type r, anything considered and it doesn't matter if it's got a knackered engine

If I were you I'd go for a type r, then you can have the drivers seat in the back and you just might be able to straighten your legs when driving.

you can do that alot cheaper, port charge is the storage then you duty and vat
pick it up
fog light £10 mot 40 you dont have to change the speedo if over ten years old
some time you have to swop tyres as they are not e marked
request for log book and reg mark i think £250 but can not remember as it has been a few years
if you want to convert it then £50 plug in on ebay and just put an mph sticker on it or just coluor in the k on the speedo

in very crude terms, calculate the price in dollars in Japan as 1:1 to Pounds in the UK.

You will need to pay the import tax on it, add the tax value to the car's value, and then pay VAT on the calculated sum + all of the regular expenses associated to MOT, insurance, roadtax etc.

it might be, that you will need to get a model report certificate for it as well, which can be rented, so that is another expense on top of it.

all in all, if you look at the prices the JDM's go here (the black one for 13grand) and you can pull it in for around 8grand, then it might be a profitable venture, bet in general, you can buy a car cheaper here, than deal with all of the paperwork.
