Default Options for more power! Help needed

Hey Guys,

Currently own a 2005 WRX Wagon with the PPP fitted, it feels lively but I want more. I'm guessing it's putting out about 265/270 ish at the moment, although I know PPP can vary substantially.

It's otherwise stock (apart from BC Coilovers - fitted after the dreaded knocking suspension) and the brakes which I'm upgrading to Godspeed big disc conversion in the next couple of weeks.

The car's coming up to 100k miles, the engine sounds great, pulls strong and no issues at all. I guess at some point it will need some work internally and I'm not necessarily afraid of that, but I'd still like the car to be reliable.

I'm after around 300/310bhp with plenty of torque. The question is, what are my options, what would you do if you had say £2,500 to spend on it.

Cheers for your views in advance.

I keep toying with the idea of breathing on my wagon. Still don't know weather I will but found this lot to be helpful.

Google Andy Forrest, racedynamix, Scoobyclinc, slowboy racing etc.
they all offer upgrade paths that work for them and give you parts options. On Duncan's pages he had a list of bolt on turbos with there characteristics and power gains.

In all honesty if you got 2.5k burning a hole in your pocket for power mods. Sell the wagon get the extra dosh and buy sti.

But saying that I think Scooby wagons are sexy

Awesome, cheers Yardz I will have a look. I'm guessing we start at bigger turbo.

Re: the buy an sti comment and just for general information. I bought the wagon because I wanted a 4x4 quick estate car that wasn't an Audi (there's not much out there, really there's hardly anything). Clearly I now love subarus but I really don't like saloons (in general not just scoobs). Since there's no sti wagon (other than the classic) I picked the PPP as the best option.

Same here buddy mines a work horse than a toy. But easy to get power hungry isn't it.

There's also jolly green monster aswell.

From personal experiance with duncan can only recommend. my dad and I built a v2 sti RA last year, was mapped by him and was a pleasure to deal with. Gave advice and options too.

Have you checked out the wagon stand up and show your self thread? Some tasty motors there

I've just bought the same car 2005 WRX PPP Wagon!

Over the next few weeks I'm adding, fuel pump, full de-cat, up rated air filter and PF7 plugs. The car will then be remapped by Bob Rawle.
I was thinking of changing the turbo but I'm going to see that the above does first. I'm aiming for just over 300 but really want great low down torque as mines a daily driver and I spend a lot of time on B roads.
I'd be interested to know what you do.

Hi there
I have an 04 wrx wagon that was PPP, now modded to 320/350. List of power related mods below that were nearly all second hand and under your budget depending on how much you can do yourself. Started my mods at 90,000 miles and still going strong at 114,000.

VF35 turbo
STI intercooler
STI pink injectors
Fuel pump (can't remember if Walbro or equivalent)
PFR7 spark plugs
Ported and wrapped standard headers
STI up pipe
Decat downpipe and centre pipe with standard PPP backbox
Green cotton filter in standard airbox and snorkus delete
Samco airbox hose
Remap by Duncan Racedynamix for 99 ron

Regards, John

I built and modded a 04 Wagon a few years ago, basically a std engine, fitted a set of my headers, a vf 35 and pink injectors. We kept the std downpipe/cat and exhaust as the Customer wanted it as quiet as std. It made 315/280. If you want it really driveable and around 300-310 I would look at a hybrid td04, a vf23/24. Std top mount is fine at that level.
The only other thing you have mentioned is the 100K, the engine is probably seen it's best days.

Is a hybrid td04 really worth the money over a VF35?

Whats the benefit of one over the other?

Sorry to Hijack your thread...

Hybrid TD04 will spool like mad and give virtually no lag and a very responsive car, but will ultimately still be limited to around 300bhp.

VF35 will give slightly more lag (not bad though) but power up to 350bhp with supporting mods. Possibly a little more on a good day!

Have a read of this also, Graham and myself spent alot of time fiddling about with my WRX and you can see the various stages of mods/tuning etc.

All really helpful guys, cheers. Clearly I have a lot to think about.

The thing that's got me wanting to do this is I'm going to GTI International next weekend with a group of Golf R/R32 lads, we've got morning sessions on the quarter mile. I'm taking the scoob (despite the fact it's a VAG event) just to see what it will do....

My plan is to get a time next weekend, then come back next year in an attempt to beat it. I'll let you know how I get on.

My car's not really a daily driver as I use a motorbike to commute to and from work, so it's mainly used at the weekends etc. It's on 93k now, so still a little under 100k. I do around 5-6k a year, so I think it's worth investing in it. In any event, it's really just a hobby for me and I love the car, I'm just interested to see how far I can go on a relatively limited budget (i.e I don't want to spend silly money).

Thanks again guys!

I bought mine when it was standard at 100k, I put it on the rolling road before I did anything to it. it made 242bhp

so a 7 year old car with 100k had 17bhp more than it had when it was built
