Default Annoying the neighbours

So I had the police round my house the other day as my exhaust is too loud (2 neighbours have complained). I haven't had a section 59 or been told to change it but I can see it escalating eventually,it is loud...very loud.
It's a straight through system with no cats and a blitz nur spec R backbox so any ideas on what back box to change it to make it quieter but not excessively quiet.

Might as well start a discussion I suppose (don't want to but I probably will).

Can I ask if the 'upgrade' was to increase performance or just the sound level? (No, don't answer that, you might condemn yourself to the powers that be).

If you do get to the stage where the police investigate then not only you could fall foul of the law but others as well.

The car will without doubt not pass an MoT in its current state, so therefore technically you're using a car that's not roadworthy.
Unless you can prove that any performance enhancement relied on the exhaust 'mods' it would probably be 'beyond reasonable doubt' that the main reason for amending the exhaust syatem was to make the car louder, which is unlawful.

Also, the MoT station that passed it could get into trouble.
If you don't that say you put the original system back on for the purposes of the MoT it could be taken that they MoT'd it that way, and hence lose their permit.
However, if you do then you've admitted guilt ie. that you have modified the system.

A quieter one and/or a more relaxed style of pulling off will hopefully help the situation.

I'm not putting you on the spot, you can answer the question yourself: are YOU able to tone things down somehow eg. no 3000rpm tickovers to get it warm, revving etc. ?

Those are very noisy exhausts, if you are drag racing you may not be able to run if they have a db limit, if you go for a slightly quieter exhaust it may keep the neighbours quiet

Well for starters the exhaust was on the car when I bought it so it's nothing I have done to the car, regarding the MOT it was done by the dealer, did the exhaust get swapped before the MOT....who knows.
Toning it down is what I've been trying to do whilst around the complaining neighbours but even under 3k it's super noisy.
The car is ONLY used through the day, never early morning or late at night.

Good, so obviously if things do escalate you can at least show that you haven't done anything (until the next MoT of course). That should stop any jobsworth from diving in straight away.
Might be worth keeping the invoice handy to show it if you get stopped at any time - it might persuade the officer not to wade in. (The point I'm making is that it isn't for YOU to prove you're innocent and if you have something which could persuade them that it is not so easy to prove you are guilty then it helps).

You're obviously trying to do something about it (don't know if SN has been used in evidence before ) so hopefully you'll have the right advice, make the right decision and that's it.

One thing I'd say though: often when people complain to the police and get a response they'll carry on, sometimes until the police take some form of action so they can explain to the complainers.
If you can do something before you get another visit and then explain what you have done (including what you've said on here re. no nights etc.) I'd hope that would convince the police that you're not a boy racer ripe for an ASBO.

you have very fussy neighbours or need to change your driving style around your neighbourhood, i mean, how long does the car idle for before you leave, a couple of minutes and the same when you arrive home ? so unless you leave at 5 am and arrive home at midnight, you need to try and drive gently down your street in 4th at 1500 rpm

Totally agree,I'm not out there to pi55 people off, driving all hours of the day, speeding, revving the knackers off it everyday etc. I like the sound but I get why they've complained. The police were nice and civil with just a heads up about the complaints which in my eyes shows they've warned me and if the complaints continue something will be done.
I guess ill just have to bite the bullet and change it.

Tell them to lose the hearing aid if the noise is too much. I get this aswell one of my neighbours exhaust is missing from the cat back and never gets a thing said. Needless to say his car is a bucket people just like to moan for any reason now.

I had same problem. Neighbour approached me and said the car is too loud and started swearing at me.

I have never taken the car out before 7am or after 9pm out of respect but this guy still felt the need to say something.

End of the day some people will just not like the noise no matter what time of day or night.

Now I try to literally coast the car when driving down the road to my flat and I also keep revs below 2k. Seems to work as not heard a peep since. And if I need to let the car cool down there is a lay by I pull into near where i live.

Its drastic but it keeps neighbours happy and I'd rather get on with them than have them moaning at me

Not saying the OP does this, but what really doesn't help is the twits that start their car and let it sit there idling before pulling away. Also with the not turning it off for two minutes when you pull up.

My mate did this the other week in his skyline, pulled up outside my house and let it idle for a good 2-3 minutes before shutting it down. And that thing is LOUD!

Just adjust your driving style.

I think that is a really good approach to it mate. Good on you

I don't think it's fair for the neighbours to be subjected to a full on race exhaust whatever time of the day. Jeez I think it would drive me mad. You want a bit of quite relax time when you're in your own home.

Yeah there will be no sat there idling or cool down time, and I'll have to keep it as quiet as I can. Fingers crossed there are no more complaints. I must admit driving back from paddys it sounded bloody good on full chat...I would have missed the noise.

I don't understand this cooling the car down for 2-3mins, if you pull down the passenger side sunvisor it says leave running for 1 min after driving hard, all i do is not drive hard for few miles before my house then roll my car for 1/4 mile before my house so on 1000 revs, then gently pull into the drive, this is if late as had have complaints before when come home late, but since doing that no one has said anything

Most times i'm home not to late so doesn't matter, just let cool down as normal

could you not fit a bung for early morning starts and neighbourhood driving, easy to fit easy to remove... and makes a huge difference to the noise level.

There are no early morning starts, the car is simply my toy so don't use it everyday, regarding the bung...it would become seriously tedious having to stick the bung in every journey, kind of defeats the purpose of a performance exhaust and restrict the system.
