Default Car tax

Evening all quick question, my car tax is due at the end of the month on my Scooby and my mot runs out on the 5th of October I was going to tax it when it's due but I have heard 2 stories the first being I need at least a month left and the 2nd being that I need 14 days left? Now I thought as long as the mot is valid it would be ok can anyone enlighten me more?

I don't see why you'll have an issue. Do you do it online using the ref code given on your reminder form? It'll take 2 mins

You do definately need over a week of mot as my old man couldnt tax his car because he only had a week left, i had to mot it for him before he could tax it. Im not sure how much more you need though.

As long as the mot is in date when the tax starts, ie 1st of the month then your ok.

^

The rules are that to Tax a car (ie. from the date the Licence is valid) the car has to have have a valid MoT and Certificate of Insurance.

Don't get confused with 'a week left', 'next month' or whatever (neither of which might be wrong, due to dates).

It is that at the date the VED applies (which is always the 1st of a month) the vehicle must have a valid MoT and Cert of Ins.

So, there's loads of instances which are right (and lots which could be wrong).

The golden rule is as mentioned.

MOT it anywhere during the month preceding the MOT expiry date and your next MOT expiry date will be 12 months + however many days to ensure you don't lose out

Yep

So Mot the car anytime in the month before you have to tax it, and as long as the Insurance is valid on 1st of the month you do so then you're OK.

I think what the op is saying though is that his tax is due 1st of Oct and his MoT runs out 5th.

He's OK, as long as he has insurance that will be current (ie. continues after) 1st Oct.

Fwiw I always get my MoT (and Ins) to expire after the Tax is due.
Once got an extra 10 months use (failed MoT in Oct, Taxed until Sept following year, Insurance ran out in August following year).
These days though an ANPR check would catch you (but having no MoT is relatively minor).

PS I'm not suggesting you should break the law, I simply forgot to get the required work done, working abroad at the time.

Well I taxed the car this morning and it made no difference how long was left on my mot as the old lady in the post office didn't even ask to see my mot or proof of insurance so I'm no wiser lol.
