Default im going through too much fuel :-/

hi, i have a 2001 impreza gx sport, im so confussed when i first got the car the fuel consumption wasnt that bad, but recently its going through some amount!! i recently put in £40 of fuel it filled it 3/4 and petrol light is away to go on and all ive done is 112miles? ive also been driving as nice as i can low revs incase thats what was causing it but seriously 112miles for £40? so im averaging 35miles per 1/4 of a tank? when before it wasnt this bad? what could it be because no lights have came on suggest anything? and there is no leaks that i can see, only thing ive noticed recently is when i rev there is a different added rumble to the noise now?

You need to fill it to the top, drive it to qtr of a tank then fill up again to work out the correct mpg, 45 quids worth is god knows how many litres depending on where you get your fuel from and the price per litre.

P.s the non turbo versions are not known for good fuel consumption either.

well the fuel was 1.19per litre and i put in £40 it filled it to exactly 3/4 of a full tank, and now the tank is on its light and ive done 112 miles, im just assuming that for 3/4 of a tank has got to do more than 112 miles? especially when im driving sensible?

i find that the fuel gauge is shocking on the impreza anyway, the full to 3/4 will last ages then after that it goes so quickly. i would do what others have said above drive till the light then fill to the brim and back down to the light

i could do this, but i was more wondering if anyone had an idea that could be wrong? because id rather not keep filling to only get around 140miles for a full tank? haha

Regardless of how fast the gauge goes down using 33l of fuel to go 112 miles doesn't stack unless your booting it or in stop start traffic which I guess your not.

Short of a trail of unleaded following you round, if it persists I would get it checked out or get rid

I don't pay much attention to the MPG side of Subaru ownership but you should really be hitting 36mpg in an NA driving steady.

Well, let's have a commonsense approach.

The only way to guarantee how much fuel has been consumed is to fill the tank to the top, set the odo to 0, do the miles and then fill it up again. Whatever it takes to fill it up is what you've consumed, for the miles the odo says.

The odo is far more accurate than one's eyes, trying to see if the petrol gauge is a) on; b) just above; or c) just below one of the marks.

You're probably right that the consumption is really bad (you get a feel for these things and of course you've had the car some time) but until anyone knows how relatively bad your car's consumption is no-one can give you a good idea of what might be wrong.

Only time I've ever had that in any car, it was down to a seized brake caliper that was stuck on.

Any signs of smoke coming from one wheel after driving? Does the car feel really sluggish?

As pointed out by others l
Fill it up amd brim the tank then reset the odometer and drive it to the light comes on and write it down and then do the same exercise again
My classic turbo has averaged 250 on super unleaded for years useing this method l
Come back to us with the exact figures in a couple of tanks as 3/4 tank might just be over half a tank by looking at the gauge so it has to be done exactly

On a long run I've had 290 per tank and a spirited run 220 on a tank

So I would think 112 on a 3/4 tank does seem a bit in the Low side

Sorry to not help, but something to bear in mind - try and drive the car around the maximum torque range so as to waste the least amount of fuel possible

Thats a good idea, as the gx should have rear drum brakes aswell and these can get seized on

Also front pistons can too

Hmm, well you'd know about it if you had a brake stuck on.

I once had it with an MR2 but was already late for work so drove on regardless. By the time I got there, smoke was pouring from the brake and the disc had a slight glow to it

The piston doesn't need to be fully stuck on, old Vauxhall bakes use to stick all the time, you could never tell, untill you noticed more wear on pads on the one side compared to the other.
