22b - How much !!!

I usually jump to their (the seller) defence when people make comments about 22B's being to expensive but in this instance even i'll agree with the op.
If the car was a UK model, completely original and in mint condition with only a few thousand miles then I could see the 40+K price tag being acceptable.

Prefer this TBH as I know the guy who has restored it.

It's the ultimate symbol of the Rallying legend. Some Impreza's where badged as special editions with a little plaque and different seats perhaps a different spoiler or a tad more power etc. They were special over the run of the mill UK Turbo or Jap WRX but the 22B is something else.
You need to understand that the Impreza was a MASSIVE hit in its day (late 90's to early 00's). Not just as a rally car but as a performance car. It won the JD Power survey several times. The WRC over and over. It was performance car of the year. Waiting lists for new ones were long and everyone raved about them. Tuning them took off and they became the Jap car to mod.
The 22B was the absolute closest you could get to a genuine WRC car of the era at the time period when the iconic Impreza was probably at it's most renowned.
Many will tell you that other later Impreza's are better to drive, faster etc. Reviews often said it wasn't great on UK roads. But this is THE icon.
That is why this model will retain its value more then any other Impreza other then a genuine WRC car.
The P1 came later in larger numbers but was basically a UK Type R. No fat arches, no 2.2 etc.
If I had £42,000? No. I would buy a P1 or R, spend money on it to make it as new. Fit a forged engine. Fit fat arches. and still have £20,000 left over to spend on a new sensible car.

Seems a bit steep . . . Now. Give it time.
Sharpy,
The closest thing I can liken a 22b to in terms of heritage and what it means to the brand is an original Audi Sport Quattro.
One of those was sold at auction by bonhams last month for £115k

The last time I seen a sport Quattro for sale near me it was £40k and I thought is was overpriced, sickens me to think I could have made double that in a few years.
Seems a bit steep at the minute but I think the prices will go very high in a few years. Everyone in my generation that do well for themselves will be wanting one for their garage, definitely the halo model.

There are many cars where you pay for their iconic status. Don't know about the BMW M3 E30 status in UK but here in Sweden you probably have to pay £25k-30k for a good one.
Escort Cosworths seem cheaper here though starting at about 11k to ~16k for the most expensive for sale here right now (winter season so most of them are garaged and don't sell this time of the year). They don't have as good reputation over here I guess
