Yeh you go online and do it, you just enter all your details on the dvla website, my Mrs bought her car the other day and did her tax online

You'll still get a green slip so can tax It at the post office if you can find one open.

The car will have to be insured to tax it,the insurance database take time to update(or it used to) so you options might be getting an insurance certificate printed off and going to the post office.
Afaik you do get a few days grace on car tax when buying a car anyway so next week should be fine.
With there being no tax discs now things have changed so this might not be the case anymore but as long as you backdate your tax from the day you bought the car then I'm 99% sure you will be ok to drive it.

Yeah new keeper green slip has one digit more ref number I think for tax, the insurance database thing could hamper the online taxing as said above but my mate phoned dvla the other day and they taxed it just after he'd insured and bought it.

I'd cut a clamp off with a stihl saw if I ever got one. But there's no chance of that ever happening here

Insurance, tax databases update almost instantly give or take. Insure before you set off and should be able to tax by the time you get there.
