It's function over design remember fellas. The body kit wasn't designed to look pretty, it was designed to do a job.
It was also the most powerful and had the highest spec of any classic shape impreza. Throw in that only 300 were ever made and you've got a special car.
I hate the looks too but love it for what it is. I'd have one if I could afford one.

It's the ugly duckling of the classic range but very, very rare indeed, one day it could even surpass 22b money, to the right buyer this would be the icing on the cake of a Subaru collection and a steal at £15k.

They only made a two hundred Catalunya's. Are they special?

I don't think so.
What a silly thing to say.
It looks like a halfords special. The standard sti 6 is a much nicer car.
He won't get anywhere near £15k. Unless an 'enthusiast' such as yourself buys it.
It's the sort of car that you have to explain what it is to your mates and family, justifying why it looks like a sack of ****.
That is not a good car.
Rare? Yes. Desirable? Not to 99% of true Subaru enthusiasts.

So being an enthusiast means that you have to like every model?
I don't think so.

Like I said, I'm not a fan of the outrageous body styling but I can appreciate the car for what it is. For that reason I'd love to own it. It's the ultimate classic in regard to spec, any enthusiast who loves the classic shape impreza would 'get it'.
I can assure you the normal sti is not a better car, yes it may be more pleasing to the eye but better car,,,,,, certainly not.

Ofcourse it's not about liking every model, it's about understanding exactly what the car is and not just describing it as "hideous".

Slightly larger air intake and manifold, rose joint suspension links and adjustable suspension. So it's a modified sti with a bodykit?

Here's a good link about the S201. Shame I can't read Japanese as I'm sure it's interesting
http://www.sti.jp/product/s201/top.htm
And yes, I suppose it is 'just' a modified STI with a bodykit, but then so is the 22B and that seems to do well.
Like I said, you either 'get it' or you don't. Yes it looks a bit wacky but at that time that's what the Japs loved. The crazy stickers found on the back of the impreza's give you an idea of what they deemed normal back then. And look at the Tommy Kaira editions that were available back then, another over the top looking thing but was very popular.
Either way it's a very rare car, yes it's not very pretty but as enthusiasts we should admire it for what it is. A limited edition last of the line classic with the highest spec from the factory ever. If that's not worth getting excited about then what is.

Yes, roughly 1270kg according to the brochure. But then it did have more power than any other classic.

£15k is a lot of money, I doubt it will sell for £5k.

As above, very rare and to a collector worth the money. Steve.
