Default Diagnostic reader 2005 sti

Can anyone please recommend a decent diagnostic reader that's not too expensive. My engine management light has come on and want to find out what fault codes come back.

Any cheap OBD2 reader from ebay will work on your car.

I have one of these.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301102835725

Works great on my hawkeye. I use Torque application on my android phone and had no issues. even worked on my Mrs Audi so can't be bad for £7.

Don't just assume the cat is knackered though. can be many things that cause that code.
I would suggest checking/replacing the cheap things first. check for any vacuum or air leaks. Air filter and fuel filter if not been replaced recently. Dirty MAF can be caused by some of the oiled type of air filters.
Your diagnostic reader might be able to give you readings from the lambda sensors so you can check they are working correctly

Can these readers be left plugged in? Will it flatten the battery
if left plugged in?

with ignition off and key out mine still shows a power light so I guess given long enough it would flatten a battery. also it is broadcasting a bluetooth signal the whole time so for that reason alone I wouldn't want to leave it plugged in.
